The new Mercedes-AMG 53 range. "New electrified 3.0-litre engine featuring twin-turbocharging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 520 Nm."

Mercedes-AMG is extending its product range with the addition of three new models and at the same time introducing a new model designation: the 53-series models of the CLS, E-Class Coupé plus E-Class Cabriolet. They combine powerful performance with sporty style and high efficiency. At their heart lies a new, electrified 3.0-litre engine featuring twin-turbocharging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter-alternator momentarily provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and furthermore feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system. Other technical highlights include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel drive system AMG Performance 4MATIC+.

Distinguishing features which are common to the three new 53-series models comprise the twin-blade radiator grille, the front apron in A-wing design, the AMG-specific side sill panels, the rear apron with diffuser insert plus the round exhaust tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome.

Meet the new Mercedes-AMG CLS53 (and E53 variants)

Mercedes-AMG has finally lifted the lid on its new mild-hybrid CLS53, unveiling 53-badged versions of its E-Class coupé and cabriolet at the same time.

Set to debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the latest models introduce a fresh model designation: the 53-series. At each model’s heart lies a new, electrified 3,0-litre petrol engine featuring a conventional exhaust gas turbocharger as well as an electric auxiliary compressor.

The six-cylinder in-line petrol unit generates 320 kW and 520 N,m, while its so-called “EQ Boost” starter-alternator “momentarily” adds 16 kW and 250 N.m, furthermore feeding the 48V on-board electrical system. All three models boast nine-speed automatic transmissions and fully variable all-wheel drive.

The new 53-badged models are visually set apart by their twin-blade radiator grilles (a trait previously reserved for the V8 models), front apron designs, AMG-specific side-sills, new rear aprons (with diffuser inserts) and round exhaust tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome.

“With the new 53-series models we are extending our portfolio in a first step towards a hybridised future with a leading-edge combination of sporty design, performance and efficiency,” said Mercedes-AMG chief, Tobias Moers.

The automaker says the new Mercedes-AMG CLS53 4Matic+ accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4,5 seconds, before topping out at 250 km/h (or 20 km/h higher with the driver’s package specified). Combined fuel consumption for this model comes in at a claimed 8,4 L/100 km. The E53 Coupé is one-tenth quicker at a claimed 4,4 seconds, while the E53 Cabriolet also takes a claimed 4,5 seconds.

Affalterbach says the electric auxiliary compressor builds up a high charge pressure without any delay, for a faster increase in torque for acceleration until the large exhaust gas turbocharger is deployed. As a result, the brand says the 3,0-litre engine reacts “extremely spontaneously and provides a highly dynamic response without turbo lag”.

Mercedes-AMG CLS53 and E53 kick-off new performance hybrid range

Hot new flagships for the CLS and E-Class Cabriolet and Coupé pack mild-hybrid tech

Mercedes-AMG has broadened its line-up with the addition of three new mild-hybrid models – the CLS53, E53 Coupé and E53 Cabriolet.

Unveiled at the Detroit motor show, the trio of new AMG models will go on UK sale in autumn at prices expected to start at around £60,000 and extend to more than £70,000.

AMG chairman Tobias Moers said: “With the new 53-series models, we are extending our portfolio in the first step towards a hybridised future.”

Power for the CLS53, E53 Coupé and E53 Cabriolet hails from a new 3.0-litre six- cylinder engine featuring twin turbocharging by means of an electric compressor and an exhaust gas turbocharger.

The in-line unit, which already powers the facelifted S500, develops 429bhp at 6100rpm and 383lb ft of torque from 1800rpm to 5800rpm.

An integrated starter/ alternator helps boost performance, delivering an additional 22bhp and 184lb ft of torque for brief periods while also providing electric energy for a 48V electric system.

By comparison, the more conventional twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 used by the E43 saloon, among other AMG models, delivers 395bhp and the same 383lb ft of torque.

The new mild-hybrid engine, which is planned for use in other AMG models over time, is mated to a standard nine-speed AMG Speedshift automatic gearbox and fully variable 4Matic+ four-wheel drive system.

In the 1895kg E53 Coupé, the new driveline provides 0-62mph acceleration in a claimed 4.4sec. The 1980kg E53 Cabriolet and 1905kg CLS53 are both claimed to have a 0-62mph time of 5.3sec. All three new AMG models run to a governed 155mph top speed.

For reference, the existing E43 saloon has a claimed 0-62mph time of 4.7sec and the same 155mph top speed.

The three new 53-series AMG models are set to crown their individual line-ups, with Mercedes-AMG confirming that there are no plans for full-blown 63-series models in the E-Class Coupé, E-Class Cabriolet and new CLS ranges.

Differentiating the CLS53, E53 Coupé and E53 Cabriolet from their standard siblings is a series of traditional AMG design elements, including a twin-blade grille, uniquely styled bumpers, wider sills and signature AMG tailpipes. The new models come as standard on 19in wheels, with 20in rims available as an option.

Inside, there is a new AMG performance steering wheel, among other unique interior styling touches.

All-New AMG 53 Engine is Official

It was rumoured for quite some time and now it's official. AMG has a new powerplant and it comes with a 53 designation. The cars to receive it are the E-Class coupe and convertible, as well as the recently launched CLS. Let's check it out.

While it may come with an AMG badge and be all about performance, the new motors are actually hybrids. Let's get the numbers out: 320 kW and 520 Nm from a 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder in-line engine. The turbochargers feature an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor, while the EQ Boost starter-alternator is capable of 16 kW and 250 Nm, which in-turn feeds the 48V onboard electrical system. The powerful engines are also efficient, with a claimed consumption figure of 8.4 L/100 km and combined CO2 emissions 200 g/km. Performance is brisk, with the CLS 53 4Matic+ capable of 4.5 seconds to 100 kph and with the AMG Drivers package, it'll rocket onto a top speed of 270 kph.

"With the new 53-series models, we are extending our portfolio in a first step towards a hybridised future with a leading-edge combination of sporty design, performance and efficiency. The basis for this is a contemporary drive configuration in the form of a six-cylinder in-line engine with electric auxiliary compressor, EQ Boost starter-alternator and 48 V onboard electrical system. The very spontaneous response to accelerator pedal input, the precision and the design focusing on driving dynamics are hallmark features of AMG As such we are providing an additional lifestyle-oriented customer group with a further attractive offering from Affalterbach", explains Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The new AMG 53 range comprises the CLS 53, E53 coupe and E53 convertible. All vehicles come with 4Matic+ all-wheel drive as well as the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.

Wonder how they're going to get that P-51 Mustang sound out of a 6 cylinder engine......

Mercedes-Benz Will Kill Off Its V6, Confirms Executive

Ola Källenius, the executive responsible for research and development at Mercedes-Benz, has confirmed that the Stuttgart-based automaker plans to phase out V6 petrol engines in favour of its new straight-six units.

Speaking to Road and Track after the reveal of the new straight-six-powered Mercedes-AMG CLS53, E53 Coupé and E53 Convertible, Källenius said that more inline six-cylinder models would follow.

Interestingly, the decision to move away from the V6 towards the M256 inline-six – which essentially features a mild-hybrid system, thanks to the so-called “EQ Boost” starter-alternator housed in an electric motor fitted between the engine and transmission – stems from a surge in the use of the four-cylinder engines in Mercedes-Benz products.

“Because [the] four-cylinder is the dominating engine formula for the world, it makes more sense now to tack the six onto that,” Källenius told the US publication.

“That’s opposed to the previous strategy, where you have the V8 and the V6 of the same tree. In terms of our overall engine production strategy, the new four-cylinder and six-cylinder are branches of the same tree. The combustion chamber of those are essentially the same, the cylinder distance of 90 mm is the same, and you can run these engines over the same production line,” he explained.

Källenius went on to add that the V6 would likely be slowly phased out rather than being suddenly axed from the brand’s range. He also revealed that Mercedes-Benz did not plan to lower its straight-six into the C-Class, before suggesting that the upcoming E53 Sedan would soon replace the V6-powered E43 version.

Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 2018 review

Should I buy one?

Overall, whether equipped with a lesser engine or with the new AMG 53 unit, the impression you get from the CLS is one of smoothness, slickness: even the 53 is never in-yer-face, never urging you to go harder or, in Australian parlance, ‘begging to be fanged’.

Eventually, it turns out Moers was satisfied that the 53 was AMG-ish enough to pass muster, but it took a lot of iterations and a lot of tweaks before it got there. Perhaps in grippier conditions, and on normal rubber, the 53 would feel more like a true AMG than it does to me here, but then I don’t mind if it doesn’t. Perhaps I’m less picky than Moers, because it strikes me there’s not a lot wrong with it this way.

Interpret this how you will but my initial reaction to the way the car looks here is there's something ganster about it. And not in the good way. Dunno what it is but there's something about the front and back that feels off.

DRIVEN: Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet 4Matic+

With the reveal of the AMG Project One, it’s clear AMG is dedicated to advancing its cars into the new world of eco-friendly performance. The prologue for that is its new “53” moniker currently found on the GT 4-door, CLS and E-Class (on the latter two, it will represent their respective pinnacle AMG models). What makes it green isn’t its twin-turbo 3,0-litre straight-six engine but rather the EQ Boost system, which generates power for a 48 V supply and powers an electric motor fitted between the engine and transmission, transforming it into a mild hybrid.

Independently, this electrical system can generate 16 kW and 250 N.m of torque which powers the E53 at coasting speeds. It also sends power to the rear wheels while the twin turbochargers spool and eliminates turbo lag. Coupled with a fully variable all-wheel-drive system, the AMG promises sharp, responsive lateral and longitudinal dynamics despite weighing in at just over two tonnes.

The E53 Cabriolet makes a stylish impression especially with its Hyazinthrot metallic red paint and black soft-top. It bears some E63 design cues, such as a twin-blade radiator grille and side skirting, but it has some unique pieces: the round quad-exhaust tips and less-aggressive facia. Next to an E43, you’d be hard-pressed to spot the difference, though.

Its subdued design matches its dynamic capabilities. Inputs produce instant results when it comes to accelerating and, despite being a hefty cabriolet, it’s surprisingly light on its feet through the bends. However, there’s some flex in the chassis and a more measured approach works best in slow corners. Regardless, the intuitive 4Matic+ drivetrain keeps it planted.

As for the engine, the aforementioned straight-six will now be standard in all AMG 43/53 models as it replaces the turbocharged V6. Coupled with EQ Boost, the punchy and immediate power source works with the revised Speedshift-TCT nine-speed torque-converter’s short ratios and shift times to provide smooth power delivery.

At present (and likely permanent), there are no Coupé and Cabriolet variants of the E63 S. The E53 Cabriolet is the flagship and, given its 0-100 km/h time of 4,5 seconds and top speed of 250 km/h (which can be bumped up to 270 km/h with the Driver’s Package), it’s certainly no slouch. It’s still quite a distance behind the E63 S’ 3,4-second 0-100 km/h sprint and 300+ km/h, though.

Sheer performance considerations aside, the E53 is engaging to pilot and rewards the enthusiastic driver through corners thanks to its clever all-wheel-drive system, progressive steering and smooth power delivery. And despite its chunky weight and impaired rigidity, the Cabriolet inspires confidence as you weave it through a set of twisty corners.

As the peak model in the E-Class two-door range, this E53 is a hugely satisfying vehicle. It may not represent the pinnacle of AMG insanity – and we need to get used to that as the brand introduces more and more “entry-level” models – but rather alludes to the direction in which Mercedes-Benz’s performance arm is headed in terms of embracing new technologies to answer age-old desires for performance and speed.

Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+ 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

There is a gentle hostility to the E53 4 Matic+ and, along with such a broad spread of ability it gives the car tremendous everyday appeal. In the real world it’s also quick enough to hang with the supercars of not so long ago and there’s luxury to spare.

But the message is too confused for a wholehearted recommendation. For a straight-up luxury cruiser with a fabulous motor, the ride is on the firm side. Then again, neither does this chassis have the poise or panache you’d want of a great grand tourer.

If you merely want the fastest, fanciest E-Class coupé money can buy, it’ll do just fine. But if you want even more character, performance and a car with a real sense of purpose, save a few pennies and go for the brilliant new C63.

Mercedes-AMG E53 Estate 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

Hard to think of a big reason not to, unless you have an especially strong desire to own an equivalent model from a different brand, or if the others offer a better deal.

This car has performance, equipment, quality, fine ergonomics and lives up to Mercedes’ well deserved reputation. It’s also enjoyable to drive.

The hybrid economies and the extra 4Matic traction just add to its all-roads, all-year appeal.
