Another Volvo stunner!

Volvo V60

Volvo Cars revealed the new Volvo V60 five-door, mid-size premium estate, underlining the Swedish company's position as a maker of cars that combine good looks with everyday practicality.

The car was launched in its natural habitat - the driveway of a family home in Stockholm - highlighting Volvo Cars' pedigree in family estates and pinpointing how the Volvo V60's versatile design caters to the diverse needs and realities of modern family life.

Few car makers can match Volvo Cars' history and credibility in making well-designed, practical and versatile estate cars.

"The family estate driver is an important customer for our business and has been for generations," said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. "The new V60 honours that tradition, but also takes it much further."

The new Volvo V60 shares Volvo Cars' Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform with the award-winning new XC60 and three top-of-the-line 90 series cars, which have been the collective force behind the company's record-breaking global sales performance in recent years.

The SPA-based Volvo V60 introduces a new standard to the mid-size premium estate segment with a luxurious interior, increased levels of space, advanced connectivity, and Volvo Cars' latest driver-support systems and other safety technology.

"The V60 really is the central point of the Volvo brand," said Robin Page, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars. "It's refined, has a beautiful proportion and stance, yet delivers on practicality and versatility."

In a first for the segment, customers can access the new V60 via Volvo Cars' new premium subscription service, Care by Volvo, which offers car access via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. Care by Volvo makes having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a mobile phone.

Reflecting Volvo Cars' industry-first announcement to electrify all new cars from 2019, the Volvo V60 comes with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options: the new T6 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340 hp, or the T8 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that delivers 390 hp.

The regular petrol choice includes T5 or T6 powertrains. Drivers who prefer diesel can select D3 or D4 engines.

The new V60 reinforces Volvo Cars' standing as the industry leader in safety, with a comprehensive list of safety features that come as standard, including advanced driver-support systems known from the 90 series and XC60, making the new Volvo V60 one of the safest cars on the road.

Looks nice and a good interior, good to see they haven't forgotten the entertainment center and just stick a tablet on the dash like some others have done, treating it like a afterthought

Impressive. I'm going to test drive this for sure.

It's hitting UK only Q3 side though. It's a wagon & those are very poor sellers locally. Let's hope they offer it here. They offer the V90 XC not the V90 locally.

Shyte. Was looking forward to stepping inside this, I've always liked Volvo.

Volvo V60 estate unveiled ahead of Geneva motor show

Roomier load-lugger goes up against Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Touring

Volvo is launching a roomier, higher-technology and much more upmarket replacement for the V60 estate at next month’s Geneva motor show.

Due on roads in September, the new load-lugger shares its SPA (Scalable Product Platform) with Volvo’s current crop of new cars and SUVs, and will be a highly competitive model in a class currently dominated by the Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Touring.

At 4761mm long, the new V60 is 117mm longer than its XC60 platform twin. It sits on a 2872mm wheelbase that's 98mm longer than the XC60's.

These roomy dimensions make the V60 the biggest car in its class. Volvo has increased both passenger and luggage space considerably from the outgoing V60, an eight-year-old design loosely based on a Ford platform that's more than a decade old.

Luggage volume now stands at 529 litres to the glass line with the rear seats up, 841 litres to the glass line with seats down and 1364 to the roof with seats down. The first figure puts the V60 ahead of the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in this regard - all key rivals with the car's new £31,810 price point.

Boot volume has been prioritised to satisfy demand from family customers who want plenty of room for parental paraphernalia and lifestyle equipment.

Capacity is said to be class-leading, meaning it is expected to be bigger than the Audi A4 Avant’s 500/1505 litres (with seats up and down).

This priority for boot volume marks a significant design change from the V90, which ceded maximum loading space to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in favour of limousine levels of rear knee room.

Owners of the existing V60 – itself a dramatic design when it launched in 2010 – will instantly recognise the higher-quality exterior and interior design that follows the principles established with the V90 and XC60.

With time to develop details such as the crisp shoulder and the bigger proportions, the new V60 may well be the best-resolved yet of all Thomas Ingenlath’s attractive creations.

The roofline, for example, inclines with a sportier taper towards the rear hatch, whereas the V90 takes a more parallel line to completion.

More deeply sculpted body sides add drama to a shape that’s otherwise unmistakably modern Volvo.

Inside, the fascia, instrument panel and centre-console touchscreen are pure XC60 and a vast improvement on the outgoing model.

At launch, Volvo will unveil a range of five engines – two diesels, one petrol and two plug-in hybrids.

Four are confirmed for the UK: the D3 and D4 diesels, with expected power outputs of 148bhp and 187bhp respectively; the 242bhp T5 petrol; and a T8 Twin Engine plug-in with 385bhp – that’s 17bhp less than in the XC60.

The 335bhp T6 Twin Engine plug-in will join the UK lineup - a first for Volvo in the UK - later, alongside the T4 petrol.

Volvo says it has “no current plans” to introduce an entry-level 118bhp D2 diesel, although experience suggests such a model might come in two to three years' time.

The same arsenal of driver assistance systems offered on other Volvo models will be available on the new V60, including City Safe with Autobrake, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving at up to 81mph, two collision warning systems and cross-traffic alert.

Reflecting the significant step up in engineering product quality and equipment levels, prices for the new car have risen considerably over the outgoing V60's £24,145 starting price. Volvo sold around 3000 V60s in the UK last year - 4.3% of the market - although it's expected that Volvo is aiming for a larger slice of sales with the new model.

Buyers will now require £31,810 for a new V60, but that does at least leave the car competitive against the German competition, and Volvo insists that the V60 will offer more equipment for the money. Expect the price to rise above £55k for the bells-and-whistles T8 plug-in, and deliveries for first cars to come in September.

We might get this as the current version of the V60 is sold and doing ok-ish here. The 60 series is very popular here so the market will definitely be there. I certainly hope that we get it though the madam is threatening to chase me away if I get one.

True, we should tomorrow what is the verdict when Volvo Car SA replies to the local motoring portals.

Volvo has been trying really hard and I must say they are succeeding in that. Just one thing... wrong country! After 5 years even volvo themselves will be taking back your trade in with disgust on their faces, like they doing you a favour that no else will. Sad

That is a mighty sexy wagon

Would make an awesome hearse..get the body there in safety..making sure not to kill it twice:D

looks like a BMW at the back..Wagon's never sold well in SA..Just another car not coming to SA I guess

What a wagon! New Volvo V60 officially unveiled…

Volvo Cars has finally revealed its new-generation V60 estate, which runs on the Swedish brand’s SPA platform.

Volvo promises the new V60 has a luxurious interior, increased levels of interior space, advanced connectivity, the latest driver-support systems and other safety technology.

Following the automaker’s announcement that it plans to electrify all new cars from 2019, the new V60 wagon will come with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options: the new 254 kW T6 Twin Engine AWD and the 291 kW T8 Twin Engine AWD.

Petrol choices will include the familiar T5 and T6 powertrains, while drivers who prefer diesel will be able to select D3 or D4 engines.

Volvo says “a comprehensive list” of safety features will come standard, including driver support systems already offered in the various 90 Series models and the new XC60.

The new wagon will feature the Gothenburg-based automaker’s Sensus infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, as well as 4G. The system is controlled via a 9-inch tablet-like touchscreen that combines vehicle functions, navigation, connected services and entertainment apps.

The new V60 boasts a claimed 529 litres of luggage space, with a whopping 1 364 litres of utility space.

Something I've been thinking a lot is that in using the SPA platform there is little to no differentiation in the Volvo line up now. We know the engines will be 2.0 with turbo and at the top end supercharge and possibly an electric, 1.5 being at the bottom end. The interior is virtually the same as well... When price points overlap there is little if anything to upsell in my opinion
