Telecoms veteran Brian Seligmann passes away

This came as a big shock to me. I have worked with Brian for many years, and he was always very enthusiastic about the local telecoms market. A sad loss.

FĂĽck - you're telling me. Brought a tear to my eye. I knew him from back in his Apple days and we worked together at MTN for some time. Last time I saw him was at a Cell C 4G launch and we had a good talk catching up (and sharing some gossip from the MTN days - nothing juicy though).

A great guy who will be missed by the industry. Condolences to his family. RIP Brian.

Strange I never heard of him.

Sounds like he mowed more than just the grass.

Guess it depends on your age and your field. He was an integral part of development of Mobile data back in the day at MTN. Think back at when Edge was the in thing and we had those PCMCIA cards and the development of 3G. Mobile data exploding and the competition it created between providers. Was exciting times, he just moved from Apple to MTN iirc.

Did he mow the cable? I have an electric mower and always thought if you did that the electricity will stop or the DB will trip. Would really like to know if anyone knows.

Well I read telecoms news regularly so at least recognise the common names. Guess he kept a pretty low profile.

I did the actual product development for HSCSD, GPRS, EDGE AND 3G and then the associated Portal relaunch. I'm sure I can find a copy of my authored and signed HSCSD motivation and then the go-to-market which I called Banzai (as in 'large pipeline'). I presented at the board for GPRS. I went to a speech coach to perfect my business case pitch as the Board was a bit skeptical, and we got it through a few months before Vodacom. I then did Edge (although the pitch was done by an MTN Group rep and I co-attended) and the same for 3G, where I did the paperwork and also got signoff, had a very good project manager. We were behind Vodacom on this as they went ahead without a full business case. For quite a while our data traffic was higher than VC's due to our strategy. Incredibly hard work but worthwhile. The bit mistake we made was not fighting management more aggressively to come in at much lower pricing from the start.
