Johannesburg - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has threatened to end its support for the African National Congress (ANC) if government continues with its renewable energy programme, saying clean power will destroy jobs and create ghost towns in coal mining areas.

“Workers of this country will not continue to vote and support an organisation which is taking away jobs from the poor. We cannot perpetually campaign and vote for the so-called New Dawn as narrated by Cyril Ramaphosa,” the NUM said in a statement on Wednesday.

Fin24 reported on Wednesday that Energy Minister Jeff Radebe signed contracts to the value of R56bn with 27 independent power producers (IPPs).
 
I don't understand how our government can be focused on anything but jobs.
 
Renewable energy and a weakened ANC. Win-win.

NUM's anger is the icing on the cake.
 
Hasn't NUM end their support like 100 times the last few years?

Yet when voting comes, they keep on voting ANC lol!

That is precisely the wrong attitude to have. The government could solve the unemployment problem in a heartbeat by making the use of heavy machinery illegal (products of an imperialistic, racist system- usual rhetoric).

The function of government is to provide services to the public that are not available via the private sector. That is it. If they bothered to do that part instead of fulfilling their masturbatory fantasies about a national democratic revolution, we would not be in the position that we are in now.

Nonsense. Employment is essential for any nation / society to function.

That wouldn't solve unemployment at all, unless you think everyone dying from starvation is employment.

The function of the government and the State are multifold. I do not mean to imply that government should be employing more people. Not at all. Both the State and the government need to work towards agendas that foster employment growth.
