Nationwide bus strike to start on Wednesday

A nationwide bus strike is set to start on Wednesday, the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council (SARPBC) said on Monday.

The strike will put at least 80% of the country's passenger buses on lock-down over a pay dispute.

"The impact is going to be felt right across the republic," Gary Wilson, secretary general of SARPBC told News24.

A last resort will be to approach the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for help after there was no change of heart by unions and employers in the 30 days' cooling off period which started on March 16 after a deadlock was declared, he said.

The strike will affect short and long-distance journeys, with a few exceptions such as Intercape.

The SARPBC will apply for the CCMA's help in terms of section 150 of the Labour Relations Act, which could give the minister of transport permission to step in and help resolve the impasse, Wilson explained.

Looks like strike season.

- It was a strike at Frankfurt Airport last week. Chaos and inconvenience.
- Seville, it was another Taxi strike last Friday, Vueling flight was delayed
- Barcelona on Sunday another protest. I missed my flight to Bologna due to road closures.

I got a notification from the Gautrain yesterday about this - there's a possibility the Gaubus will be affected.
 
jassis im so gatvol about all of this every year or 2... FFS, cant these clowns agree a 5 year deal at least, because while i understand these guys should have a decent wage, there are some people who earn less than them. Those people cant go on a strike like these bus drivers, because they will lose their jobs if they do.

Well actually they often do have multi-year increase agreements, but then demand more in a subsequent year which almost inevitably turns into a strike. And unfortunately the people going on strike can't do the basic arithmetic that shows going on anything more than a very brief strike results in losing more than is gained from the increase they eventually accept.

Almost anyone in full-time employment can go on strike, but they lose out on pay just like these bus drivers will.
 
2 days set aside for talks as CCMA intervenes in nationwide bus strike

Unions and employer associations are expected to meet at the bargaining table at 10:00 on Thursday as the nationwide bus strike enters its second day.
The talks have been set down for two days, according to a letter the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) sent to unions, and which News24 has seen.

The CCMA was acting in terms of a section of the Labour Relations Act, which allowed it to offer its help in resolving a public interest dispute through conciliation.
"We have managed to get all parties to meet in Johannesburg tomorrow (Thursday) at the bargaining table. Hopefully we can persuade the parties to reach an agreement," confirmed Gary Wilson, secretary general of the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council.

Yeh.. I mean, overseas in plenty countries, trains, busses and public transport are the preferred means of getting around. But hey, in SA we need to be different lol
