South African online shops tested - with unexpected results

I'm not surprised by loot.co.za

I ordered Onrush PS4 on 24 July 2018 - 18:54. Courier to my door in Centruion. Still waiting for it to be delivered.

They used Fedex economical courier which is shockingly bad. Not only that parcel only gets dispatched like 24 hours later of an item that they have in stock. Just imagine someone ordering it and it needs to be delivered to an outlaying area. They also offer Post Office Speed Services courier which is faster than FedEx as it's overnight to your post office.

If you ever order from loot choose that option because even a post office on strike delivers faster than FedEx economical....

No surprises with loot, they usually take along time.

Regarding the physical stores, i think that should be expected if they have stock.

Loot had an armed robbery a few weeks back. This apparently impacted on delivery of some items. Overall, their prices are very competitive

And BTW, Iqbal Surve does not own it, he is a shareholder in one of the investment companies afaik

I guess I have been lucky with Loot then. 5 orders placed, 3 delivered within 24 hours. 1 item "not in stock" delivered within 48 hours. The 5th item, also "not in stock", was due for delivery 31st July or 1st August, arrived 27th July. In all cases, I selected economy courier (FedEx)

Also happy with Loot service so far (but not with the ownership...)

Raru dont have stock of anything you actually want. "Out of Stock" "Out of Stock" "Out of Stock" "Out of Stock" "Out of Stock" "Out of Stock" "Out of Stock" "Out of Stock"

"While the market share of online shopping in South Africa is only around 1% of the total retail market, it is expected to grow to 4% by 2021."

1/100 is not much....Imagine them handling 70%-?

the best thing about loot is that almost every time we buy something, we get a R75 voucher.

the downside of that is that it's because they can't get the item anymore.

one must look at was whether it was the same item being bought from each store what was the cost of the item and the cost of delivery Finally one one needs to look at where the item was sent from and where it was sent to

Surely the times for delivery depend on where the warehouse is located? With Takealot and Loot being based in Cape Town, I would expect a longer delivery.

Perhaps the test should be repeated with delivery in a neutral centre, PE, Bloem?

Incidently, my son, living in the UK, seldom shops. Online deliveries are same to next day. Cat food is on a standing order and gets delivered just before it runs out, at prices less than the supermarket. Wand wood for shelves or cupboards. Order online. Online shopping is still in it's infancy in SA.

Avoiding raru and loot like a plague now, takealot is the lesser of two evils :D Loot 15 days for a item with a 3 day lead, raru 25 days for a 4 day lead time item, it actually took them 2 days to pack and shop.

Urgh Loot, just always wait, wait, wait. Also, item listed as in stock, ordered, paid for... 2 days later check on order, now marked as awaiting stock.

Lucky if anything gets delivered within 2 weeks from Loot.

Agree about Raru, always Out of Stock.

/sigh

Takealot: I baught a toaster online, order 57847764 and delivery promised before 5.00pm on the 16th of July. On the 17th the order was rescheduled for delivery before 5.00pm. On the 18th the order again was rescheduled for delivery before 5.00pm.
Online shops should deliver orders on the promised day of delivery, at least not 3 days later.

It is not the online shop's fault for failure for delivery it's the courier who causes quite a lot of the delays.

This many times over.

Courier companies are bloody terrible.

No phone calls to confirm time or whether one is home. No schedule kept to other than "during the course of the day".
In short simply no communication between courier company and customer.

One thing Zando (clothing store) has going for it is that the item/s ordered are delivered to the postnet branch of ones choice in all major centres and wherever there is a branch.
It is simple and easy and a lesson for other online shops.

I recently had a delivery from Loot. The Courier phoned from the gate when he arrived. Most other Companies the Courier Hoots and hopes that you will hear him. Lots of complexes do not have intercoms or bells at the gate due to security concerns, you have the contact number PHONE.

Don't Takealot own their courier company, Mr Delivery? Agree with that it might be out of their control from time to time, but with Takealot owning their courier, it should be less of a problem with them.
