quick glance at webafrica, openweb and ods's router based options

leaves you with

webafrica and openweb
paying R1710 setup fee
12 month contract
http://www.openweb.co.za/router
http://www.webafrica.co.za/solutions/internet_access_adsl_is_uncapped.html

ods
free setup
no 12 month contract
http://www.ods.co.za/Services/uncapped_adsl.asp

if one isp being ODS can do the setup for free and no 12 month lock in contract why can't Webafrica and Openweb do the same ?

that R1710 is one massive rental/setup fee !!!

Uncapped with a THERESHOLD OF 30GB..

That kind off takes the UN out of UNcapped dont you think ;)

They do, but there is a threshold.

Our uncapped product does come without a setup fee. Based on our service we hope that the customer will stay with us for long enough that we will be able to pay back the initial set-up fee. We believe this is a market first. And will continue to be first to market with new product. We will soon be giving 087 numbers free (No line rentals) with all uncapped contracts.

I still don't get how they can advertise an "Uncapped" account and still pace limits on it?

Is "uncapped" not supposed to mean "uncapped". So what they are syaing is for instance pay us for a 384 line speed "uncapped" account, but we will limit your speed so that you can't actually make proper use of what you paid for. If you choose a 384 line speed package you are paying a bit less, but then you are limited through your line speed. So therefore you are limited with the amount of usage you can get out of the account. In my view that is a penalty you pay for. However if you dare use the [ackage as you see fit (something you paid for) you get penalised even further.

Thevery indeed, I'm so sick of the excuse "oh but Telkom charges us", try to be a bit more inovative people, that excuse is wearing thin. Alternatively DO NOT advertised "Uncapped" accounts if you don't sell uncapped accounts. IMO this is blatant false advertising, no matter how you sugar coat it.

...maybe time to take the ISPs to the Advertising Authorities...

I've got one of Openwebs uncapped accounts and the best I've got out of it for the past few days is 22kb/s - is this some kind of pathetic joke?

Uncapped accounts are a waste of time. You get the absoulte lowest traffic priority. Even lower than standard 3gig accounts. The only uncapped accounts worth going for are the Fibre Uncapped accounts starting at R2500 upward.

I don't know if there is a diff. between the std uncapped and when they do those week specials. But i did one of those week specials and got full speed for the whole period

This is one of those openweb 1/2 month specials that someone got me for my birthday . . .

. . . waste of money really, but it really is the thought that counts :)

Report ISP`s that lie about "uncapped" products to the ASA. I am not to sure what a "threshold" is, but if its snake for "capped", take the bastards to the ASA. Make them accountable for their deceit.

Yes it is one of those that i had, and my experience was great...only prob was i ran out of ideas as to what to download ;)

Got a call asking how I was enjoying my uncapped account.

How fast should a 512 be? At least 45kbs right?

I'm used to getting full speed on a 4 meg line so it just feels slow?

Math - not my strongest subject but between 50 and 64 KB/s.

Just about all ISP's worldwide seems to start introducing the "Fair Use Policy"
Depends on how they implement it - I dont have as much of a problem with them restricting extremely high usage users during peak hours but they need to un-throttle people outside of that period.
