GTS: ‘90 Mbps Broadband Triple play Service in SA in 2007’

It sounds a bit hyped, 90Mbps would be brilliant, but whats the point if backhaul links cant handle, higher contention ratios.
 
will BPL fall in the same category as adsl, as in will it fall under the same regulations (like free local bandwidth). cos free 90mbps after cap sounds good.

Lets ponder on how can ivy destroy all our hopes and dreams, it seems a bit late for an attack from the orc, but don't count her out just yet.
 
The 90mbps is mostley for delivering video to you, I'm sure the internet speed will be MUCH slower as soon as you get to the backbones.
 
goal actually has some serious money behind it. One of the shareholders is a Central african Telco tycoon. His name just escapes me now.

Seriously, is this not a whole lot of hype? I have serious doubts as to whether this will ever take off - although I really hope it does. Where is the POC, show us something tangible. Right now it sounds like a whole lot of hot air.

If this ever comes into play this will kill companies like Sentech and IBurst.
 
Most good news - although they make vague promises regarding "the middle of next year"

Sounds like another imminent deadline to me... *sigh*
 
Well, let's all remind ourselves how much hype there was when GTS announced 5Gig ISp accounts for R228 when at the time it was R199 for 3 Gigs. They have a good marketing dept I must say. Stirring up hype but up till today (4 months later) we are still yet to see the R228/5Gig accounts.

Another issue, heard around the forum that BPL PoC has shown to be not very fast in terms of latency and bandwidth as compared to ADSL. I would then imagine 90mbps is max and we prob expect 5-10mbps average which I guess is still acceptable.
 
Intention

Nearly thought it is 1 April. It is not about the business model with them anymore. They have had to many press releases before with fantastic promises and no action to follow up BUT I just so hope that I am wrong on this.
 
these guys piss me off. They came with such a bang in the media with all this 5gig for R228 and then fast BPL etc... utter crap.. first bring out something then talk about it in the media... I remember we all said lets give them a chance before critisising them, but now this article just proves that theyre marketing is gr8 but the actual service is yet to reach the mark.

Ive already got a bad impression of GTS. They seem to be all talk with vague distant promises. ( middle of 2007?. We'll all probably forget about this article by then)
 
What a way to fully pulverise Telkom :) I really really hope this kicks off, falls into "MY" definition of affordable, and is as fast and convenient as promised. The biggest trick in the book is to under-promise and over-deliver...with this in mind though it may seem like GTS might fall short seeing as they promise big time.

Also if I were GTS I would be really quite so Telkom doesnt have time to react...and then whack them with all I've got :D. This is more like scare tactics :/ Although I suppose nothing gets past ICASA and the Kommunikayshuns "Minister" without Telkom hearing about it :(
 
I seriously hope this does deliver, it would go a long way in helping to bring the prices of Telecoms down in this country....
 
I think GTS is a load of rubbish actually. Every few months they come out and make outrageous promises and then disappear back into their little black holes. I think this qualifies as imminent bla bla bla.
 
If Telkom manages to keep their SAT3 monopoly next year then this wouldn't make much difference to us anyway.
 
Maguire guarantees that their broadband service will operate at a speed of 90 Mbps which is 22 times faster than Telkom’s fastest broadband offering.

If SAT3 does actually become 'open' next year, I think it could still handle a couple of thousand users going at 90mbps. The SAT3 is more under-utilized than Ivy and Telkom would lead you to believe.
