1) Firstly I understand Internet Solutions is not that strict on capping?

2) If you do overusage on an account with OpenWeb for example its to my understanding they dont mind, correct?

3) WebAfrica has their own capping system apparently, does this cause a more strict capping? Also they have a policy for overusage apparently, I imagine since SAIX charges per gig thats why, but IS doesnt charge them for overusage.

What is everyones general opinion of the best Local Only ISP. Obviously the local accounts for home users will obviously be used on I.S News Servers.

AFAIK the capping etc. on IS accounts is done by IS itself and not by the resellers because they just buy an account from IS rather than being charged per gig by SAIX as you said. So essentially the capping should be the same on both ISPs. the only differential would be service. Openweb are really good, the one advantage WebAfrica has is that you can pay online with a credit card and get instant activation, for the SAIX accounts anyway, presume its the same for the IS ones.

Dec 2006 I took a 1Gig / 10 Gig local with OpenWeb.

Besides the usual prob of no international / local seperation in BW use , I used it on the IS news server for .. well you know.

The biggest pain was the IS server itself.... On my 384K line I would get 39K dl and then down to 7-8 K dl. On average for the 10Gig local I would say 60% of the time I was under 10K dl.

Very frustrating indeed. IS re-sellers need to put pressure on IS to sort this out.

I appreciate your point of view on the matter and will not agree nor disagree due to my current inexperience with the usage of both accounts in the real world.

My original question was asked in a manner to collect information from possible users or staff currently working with or part of the WebAfrica ISP. I was interested in understanding the conditions and implications that might arise from the use of such a local only account with either ISP so in future when I have a potential customer of either the service providers I am able to give a recommendation based of fact and experience from current users.

Again I appreciate your point of view that you believe OpenWeb is the one and only to go to, again I also highly recommend OpenWeb, but I am in search of balanced knowledge of all ISPs and their services so I am able to make an educated decision when required.

Hi Mr G

We resell "local only" SAIX and IS accounts. On the I.S side it is the same product as all the other IS resellers and capping is handled by IS.

I will ask Richard to try answer your questions more specifically though.

1.) yes, many ppl get way over 30gig (local) on their accounts.

2.) yes they dont mind, they not affected.

3.) think webafrica only have their own capping policy only for their SAIX accounts, and IS accounts are capped normally...cos on greenlab a few ppl with webafrica local only's went quite far over the 30gig local, so im assuming IS are responsible for capping the accounts. so the capping should be lenient for webafrica IS just like openweb.

edit: only read what wamatt said now :) so i guess im on the right track

Hi everyone,

Yup, basically everything indicated here is the situation. On the SAIX side of things we have greater control in how we can cap users, which means that we handle the actual capping/disabling of accounts (and so on and so forth), while on the IS side the capping is handled by IS themselves and not us (we merely indicate what kind of account a specific user is using, not whether they are capped or not). As we do not handle capping ourselves we are charged on a "per account" basis, not a per GB basis, and as such any over usage doesn't get charged to us.

IS's capping policy at this time is lenient and they do not appear to hard cap accounts when they exceed their 30GB threshold (though this can always change, at the moment that is not the case). This is the same as with every other ISP reselling IS accounts in general (it's not only limited to the local only ones).

Are there any specific questions anyone has regarding the service?

I've never been capped with Web-Africa IS even though reaching 40gig, about 1 and 1/2 week from the end of the month, and ended with 49gig or something, but when I was with Openweb I would get capped the second I exceeded my cap. IE when I hit 30gig and the connection was reset I was capped.

I get the feeling Openweb is watched a bit more carefully than the other IS isp :) Who could blame them though, most Openweb users probably exceed their cap...

that was quite a few months ago with all IS clients there was strict capping........ now also for openweb lenient capping........i got to 64gigs in november on a 30gig local only

Odd, I always exceed the cap on openweb accounts. I wonder if they have any control ove the capping on Openweb's side or if it is also controlled by IS themselves at the WA representatives has told us is the case with them.

I think the IS system is different in that the ISPs resell whole accounts and then IS handle all the capping etc. whereas with SAIX they get charged per gig so they handle the capping.

I think so too which is why I find it odd that people seem to have got more out of their WA accounts than out of Openweb ones...

WA have only recently started offering IS accounts recently, maybe IS have just been more lenient lately on all accounts but its more obvious with WA only offering them recently?

Indeed, this could be the case.
