External Harddrive gets extremely hot and freezes

So I had my 400G Seagate for nearly a year now and it is enclosed in a ST Lab external chassis.

But after about 10 mins the HD and PC freezes up, the HD is extremely hot then. As soon as I switch of the power, the PC goes on like nothing have happened.

Why would this happen?
 
If the enclosure have a fan, check that it's working.

Otherwise you'll have to run it without the lid, or look at ways to force cooling.
 
you mean it gets extremely cold and freezes. hot things can't freeze.
