Hi,

I had Windows XP installed on both my PC's and connected via a wireless connection.

I decided last night to format the one. Everything is up and running again, but now when I try click on that PC it pops up with a box ....

User name, password.

What on earth could this be?

Are you trying to access shared files? If so you have to enable the guest account on the computer you're trying to access, can't remember the exact sequence but I think its right click on my computer > manage and then the option's there somewhere. Then if it asks you for a password again just use user: guest, password: blank

The best way to do this is:
User: Administrator
pwd: YourAdministratorPasswordHere

The pwd will be the admin password on the remote PC. If no password is set for admin then it won't work (XP does not allow login via blank pwd except for guest).

Then type the following into the address bar in the explorer:
\\RemotePcNameHere\C$\

Then you can see the whole harddrive on the remote PC.:)

Or if you just want it to go back to the way it always was:
explorer==>tools==>Options==>View==>Use SImple files sharing ===ON

No the PC was formatted - so I hadn't forgot or even set passwords on ANYTHING. Hence me asking.

I think Syndre is right ; will give it a bash soon! Thanks!

Ye this happens with new installs, very irritating. Basically by default you cant access a PC unless its has a password set. And I never set passwords because I just don't need to.

I give up! I did all that for you already. If you insist on formatting these machines you're hurting no one but yourself!

No password = no remote access.

Dolby , you can enter via administrator mode...

with the nice login screen that shows the cool little prentjie of you with your name next to it ... press " alt ctrl " and tap " del " twice. This will bring you to the old win2000 type login where you're able to change your usename.

change it to administrator and enter the admin password, or leave it blank if you didnt enter one... from there you can create a new account.

No, I told you ... it broke! I just changed the IP BUT I changed it back :/ Everything actually did work ... except my media streamer. After format everything works ... except this :/

I haven't had time to try as yet, but I'll try tonight
