We support Telkom

Gimme Their Address

has anyone get the email / fax of SMME
these guys are obviously in cahoots with Telkom.
prob a brother in directors position
lets bombard them with truth!

Mr Khaas is well versed in the telecoms sector and I believe he has always had the best interests of the people at heart, but I would be very interested to hear his reasoning behind this unilateral support for Telkom, considering the fact that this particular company has historically done very little in townships, 'peri'-urban and rural areas in favour of profit, rather than service to the people. How many million disconnections?
Telkom does not equal affordability, it never has, and I very much doubt that BCX will all of a sudden be the silver bullet that changes all of that.
BCX mightve been a great vehicle for ICT, but what happens when it is ultimately controlled by Telkom?
Leopard / spots!

Hi JXHarding

The SMME forum has been very critical of Telkom in the past. Tebogo is generally outspoken regarding the problems in the broadband and telecoms arena, and I am not entirely certain as to why he thinks that this merger will mean better services for underserved areas. Here is an interview with Tebogo: http://www.mypodcast.co.za/?p=24

I will get hold of him to get a proper response.

Regards,

RPM

said that the deal would mean access to affordable ICT for people in these areas

They understand that this is Telkom?

I must have missed Telkom becoming the friend and helper of small businesses. When can urban small businesses expect to start receiving these cheap services?

The organisation may not actually speak for their members.

Not an official or permanent opposition party to Telkom

Quite often there is a general disposition within industry to dismiss or even frustrate anything that Telkom does without assessing the merits or demerits of their action. As correctly pointed out, the SMME Forum is one of the staunchest advocates of competition and broadband provisioning in SA, especially in previously neglected areas (PNA). No doubt there are numerous other bodies that have been doing more in this regard. However, we should not paint ourselves in a corner and rubbish anything that Telkom does. Sure, we need to be vigilant but until we appreciate some of the finest elements of the transaction and take advantage of what it presents us, we may very well be throwing away the baby with the water. Not so long ago, Telkom announced a capex of some R30bn towards the NGN. The question is how can we as responsible industry players influence the allocation of such much needed resources including the envisaged transaction to encourage competition on the one hand, and also accelerate deployment of ICTs, especially in PNAs. As we seek answers to this question, let us refrain from name-calling and making wild accusations.

I think derekc is being totally out of order and malicious to suggest that the SMME Forum accepts bribes.
reech: thanks for refreshing our memories and indeed the fact that our position has been consistent throughout. what i did find interesting is the fact that in one of the historical postings, i was said to be Sizwe's uncle. Now my brother is a director at Telkom! We accept bribes! What is next?

As a 28yo micro enterprise owner, I do not feel your support of Telkom is proper. I am operating my business in advantaged neighbourhood and even I cant afford the prices Telkom charge, how can people from PNA's get ITC if Telkom refuses to put infrastructure in there because its not profitable enough?

Telkom also tells lies and doesn't have the decency to respond when caught out. Its also easy to suspect some monetary involvement from Telkom, Telkom is very rich and not above doing such things, but you are right, it could have been better phrased, as a question perhaps. Do you perhaps own any Telkom or BNX shares, if I may ask just to clear the air?

In the end I contend that supporting this deal is to suppress the competition and stiffle the marketplace and not be of benefit to SMME's and is thus contradictory to your general aims.

Almost sounds like you're worried about your share if you're critical of telkom.

Thanks for posting Mr Khaas and warm welcome.
I am not as optimistic as you regarding anything that Telkom does sadly.
My opinion has been moulded by years of abuse, financially and verbally.
If you kick a dog everyday for years, sooner or later he will hate you, and growl every-time you approach or walk past, its a natural reaction and response.
Telkom quite frankly has kicked me enough.

I also think its very optimistic to think that Telkom has all of a sudden found its moral compass with regards to its obligation to the people or PNA's for that matter.
They are a profit driven entity protected by the state. As long as that relationship remains, very little can be expected especially in terms of real competition.

re the R30bn, has Telkom given any indication of where or how this money will be spent, other than saying they plan to do so?
I have a real concern that a large portion of this will go to building networks and infrastructure outside our borders (more lucrative markets for the company).

With the acquisition drive that Telkom is on, they clearly are trying to diversify and establish new revenue streams. Historically speaking this means milking the public / business to maximise profits.

Sure, we need to be vigilant but until we appreciate some of the finest elements of the transaction and take advantage of what it presents us, we may very well be throwing away the baby with the water
Very true, perhaps rpm or one of the learned telecoms reporters can draft a report highlighting the benefits (other than the obvious ones to shareholders). It would make for interesting reading.

Just being realistic here. Howcome all of a sudden you have a u-turn about this issue? I was being sarcastic about the bribe thing. sorry if I came across as malicious. Thing is again...jobs will be lost again. Telkom buys its 'competitior' which will mean higher prices for SMME's and yet the SMME forum will support the move? - Why? The reason you give is not adequate.

Bwana has a good point...is it a case of being intimidated? I always try to put myself in a neutral point of view regardless of the situation. But the fact that Telkom wants to buy BCX means aggresive moves to reduce competition. How can we see that in a good light as you want us to?

Well.... now we know why theyre called teh The Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME) Forum. It appears they HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT ANYTHING. To make such a retarded statement like that, just makes them look like a bunch of well paid idiot Telkom brown nosers.

Telkom should be divided in small little pieces, not allowed to further swallow the economy of SA. Mr. Khaas should be thinking long term here not short term.

Since when does Telkom create employment?

However I do agree that the BCX acquisition should mean more employment opportunities in the ICT sector, just would have been better if Telkodemonopolies was not the employer...
Quite right - they have retrenched tens of thousands of people this century.
