man who used a chain-saw to behead his young dog fled a Delmas court with his tail between his legs after appearing on a charge of cruelty to animals.


Delmas — Phillip Matthysen fled when Beeld’s photographer moved in for a close-up after his brief court appearance.

Matthysen, who lives on a small-holding at Sundra, has been provisionally charged with animal abuse following the gruesome incident at his home on February 22 this year.

The police said his four-month-old husky died painfully. Apparently he attacked it because it had killed his macaw parrot.

Alex Serate (31), Matthysen’s gardener, allegedly held the husky down while Matthysen sliced through its head with a petrol-driven chain-saw.

Neighbours who heard the dog crying and whimpering witnessed the incident and summoned the police.

The husky’s carcass had already been buried when two police officers arrived at the smallholding.

Leon van Vrede of the Sundra police confirmed the incident. “Two witnesses phoned and reported what had happened,” he said.

The two men were arrested on February 23, a day after the incident, and both were later freed on bail.

Matthysen and his attorney Dirk Maree refused to speak to Beeld.

Prosecutor Gustav Schult said a formal charge sheet will be prepared once the court receives a report by a veterinary surgeon. The case has been rescheduled for a hearing on July 24.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals expressed its disgust at the action.

National spokeswoman Christine Kuch said the way in which the dog was murdered was very worrying.

“This dog was killed in a horrifying manner. The motive seems to have been revenge,” she said.

My dog ripped the leg of my parrot, the parrot was expensive and I loved her!!
She mastered the door bell sound, the telephone and the car alarms!!

But I never kill my stupid dog!!!

Well this idiot hasn't reached the heights of influence as Yengeni has.
 
Pet ownership holds certain responsibilities! You cannot call the dog stupid if the human (the so called intelligent species) has not taken the time and effort necessary to ensure that the various pet species living together in a household are socialised /and /or trained so that they can live safely together. Stop blaming the 'stupid' dog and rather blame the 'stupid' owner for allowing one pet to kill another.:mad:
It's a bloody simple solution - if you have pets make an effort to train them so that they know and accept what you expect from them!

Have you SEEN how animals are slaughtered?

Really, it's not that much worse than what happened here in the news story.

My dad used to farm chickens for a while. When we took them to the slaughterhouse, first the birds would get paralyzed with electricity, then you'd partially slice their heads off (but not so that you kill them) so that the heart would pump all the blood out.

This is the way chickens are normally slaughtered. I don't think anyone will claim that it's less gruesome than what happened to that dog.

Have you ever heard a sheep when it's throat is cut?

... I'm guessing not.

Not that I like the way this dog was killed. But to charge that man with cruelty to animals while the entire country tacitly approves such behaviour through their meat diet is the height of hypocrisy.

Our neighbours used to let them run around for a while with their heads off! Call it a formative experience. :D
