Anyone own a Nikon D80 ?

Dont have one, but its a good camera - played with one for awhile, nice choice over a Canon 400D

Heard it's a decent camera but if you're going the Nikon route there are better models to choose from - the D300 for one.

The D80 is a class camera, maybe slightly overpriced in SA but still a great camera. The D40/40x and D60 are not nearly as good, but then again they're much cheaper..

D80 would be a choice over a 30D maybe, it's a far better camera from a photographer's viewpoint than a 400D. The two models aren't competitors.

It will show up in a lab test, but means nothing in terms of image quality.

6mp to 10mp is nothing.
There's more to it than image quality. What about printing enlargements, cropping, image manipulation . . . . are you saying that having more pixels to play with wont make a difference?

For the D40 to D80, yes, that's what I am saying. Try it for yourself. I think you will be surprised by the outcome. 5D, now that's a difference! :)

ok - prove it to me - or at least explain why bringing in a tight crop wont benefit from having more pixels - or why you wont be able to print a bigger print from a 10mp than you would from a 6mp camera because I'm having a problem getting my mind around it. :)

Anyone know of a professional photo school i can go to in GP ?

I bought the D80 kit and got it CHEAP + free tripod and bag, but since then i didnt get time to mke good use of it, now i want to put the camera to full use.

Have you thought about checking out your local camera club? http://www.photosa.co.za/clubs/club.php

You can also pick up plenty from the web - one of the best things about digital is that practising is free :D

mp is one of many aspects that make up a photo
don't bother debating technical macros and micros on a forum
you can print the same size photos from the D40 and the D80
they can both produce great photos
you can tell the difference if you shoot test shots with both cameras and look at 100% crops in photoshop
