Hey guys

Last night my pc was running fine, i left it on and when I came home it was in sleep mode. I double clicked and the pc came out of sleep mode but nothing was displayed on the screen.

This morning I switched on the pc, it does sound as if the gpu is stressed a bit for a few seconds but then it goes back to normal. My screen displays the start up screens ( black with white writing) but after that there is nothing displayed.

Now I booted in safe mode and the screen displays safe mode. Could this be any chance be a virus? Or is this a hardware related issue? Any advice?

I just replaced my psu's fan, ive got a 460W PSU and a Radeon4870. I think this might be the issue?

try to uninstall the gfx driver in safe mode then reinstall it in windows. And look for a driver update for your gfx driver.

third time lucky

im going to a big lan next weekend, scared my pc is going to do this there

At least there will be a lot of people to help you there then :D
It still sounds like a driver issue to me.

Ok heres the problem, when I start up my PC it loads until the welcome screen but then the screen goes black

When I boot up in safe mode it works, then what I have to do is say 'Restart'.
Then it boots up in normal mode fine..

Is this a driver-related issue?

It's most probably your Explorer.exe process that's got some hang up with it.

It could be a virus, it could also be a reference to Explorer causing it not to load:

1. CTRL-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager.
2. Click File | New Task(run).
3. Type regedit in the Run box and click OK.
4. Browse to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution.options

5. Under this key there will be subkeys named explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe. Delete the explorer and iexplorer keys entirely. They should not be listed under the Image File Execution.Options key.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
7. Restart the computer.

Hi thanks for your help.

Under :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution.options

I have

DllNXOptions

and

IEInstal.exe

Backup that registry key, right click save and save it to file, then delete it (ieinstall.exe).

Other than that.

Open My Computer> C: properties>check disk for errors, check both options and restart your pc to do a disk check.

Do a malware scan with Spybot Search and Destroy and with Malwarebytes Antispyware.

;)

I did delete IEInstall.exe

I ran the disk check

I did the malware scan

The IEInstall.exe is back when I re-boot though?

What now?
Is this a virus or is it not maybe a driver issue with my gpu?

Get AutoRuns from the above link. View the Logon section for startup entries loading with Windows.

Things like Adobe Reader, maybe Google Updater etc. remove the checkmark from it and rebooot and see if it boots fine.

Something might be causing Explorer not to start properly. I wouldn't worry about the IntallIE key at this stage, doubt that would cause it.

If all else fails at the LAN and you can't see your desktop with just the black screen, press ctrl+alt+del and start Task Manager and click File>New Task and type in explorer and press enter. That should start explorer manually.

A service I tend to disable in all Windows Editions is the Webclient> start>run>services.msc> look for WebClient, stop it, view it's properties and choose disabled. (Or go to the Services section in Autoruns and remove the checkmark from WebClient.)

Especially in a domain environment this causes near instant logon. Microsoft isn't very specific what it does, so I just disable it, haven't seen any side effects.

Any updates lately?

Firstly, open the CMD.exe and type "sfc /scannow"

Thent, ry to restore your older setting in safe mode. You can type rstrui into the search box and hit enter. You will immediately see a screen where you can choose to roll back the system to the last restore point. You can select "Recommended restore", and just click next, or you can choose a different restore point. Make sure that you choose the latter.

I hope this helps

Start|Searchbox type msconfig|Startup. Disable any 3rd party stuff that shouldn't be starting with your system.

Restart your system, press F8, select Enable Boot Logging from the startup options then select your Windows installation. When Windows starts up, it will now create a boot log called ntbtlog.txt in your %systemdrive%\Windows directory.

Paste the contents of your boot log here then we'd be in a better position to help...

I have Windows 7 installed on a spare drive and it does exactly that.

I have a Core2duo E4500, 2Gigs RAM, Nvidia 9600GT, SATA CDRom and IDE harddrive
What are your PC specs?

Cant post the contents of the boot log as it is far too long.. any ideas as to how I could get the .txt file to you? Email?
Let me know.
