My thread about Wimax in Rustenburg refers
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=118707

I asked another company if they can offer me WiMax (and if its available in Rustenburg), then I get this response.

"Hi Corne

Unfortunately we do not supply WiMax packages.
The latencies on any wireless connection will always be more then cable.
So unfortunately the only option we can offer you is ADSL.

Kind regards

Justine"

Ok, referring back to what I asked in my other thread, some people responded that latencies could / SHOULD be the same as ADSL when using WiMax. Now, which is it then????

GOOD or NOT good?

I would like some examples of gamers playing for instance Counterstrike Source, Battlefield 2 , UT 3, Guild Wars etc. Please, if its possible......

First of all, that claim is ambiguous - while wlan is indeed slower than ethernet, good conditions would make wireless service just as good if not better, depending on various factors.

Secondly, why are you trying for WiMax when you've been offered ADSL? WiMax is generally an alternative for those who can't get ADSL in their area...?

I have played BF2142 on my pc in the past and it worked fine.... lately ive been playing GTA4 and a lot of COD4 on the Playstation and also works perfect... never had any problems with my Wimax from Mweb(384Kb/s).

With all my experiences with any wireless (3G & HSDPA/ WISP) etc wireless is BAD, well the service is just as bad :( Various factors you stated, that is why wireless is bad....

ADSL would be hard to get installed, because I am renting, landlord need to give authorisation, etc etc, maybe also want to use my connection as well :(

So Wimax would be the easier option..

Firstly, WiMAX's latency is fine for gaming. I play on Xbox Live all the time with my WiMax.

Secondly, you will need to get the landlord's authorization for WiMAX as well, as most rental contracts stipulate that no external antennas are to be installed without the landlords permission. And WiMAX has quite the antenna, not huge, but sightly non the less. It is easier to move than ADSL though.

But yea, to answer your question, I've played CoD4, Halo, RB6V2 and a whole bunch of other games over WiMAX without any problems. Even in crappy weather.

Ok, right so latency is fine on WiMax :) . Guess its a sales person that informed me of that answer, ROFL, not knowing Wimax probably.

Thats what I thought about Wimax, I guess the landlord should give permission :(, but in the case of moving to a new place, it will be a lot easier.

Thanks for the reply !

Hi CVRChameleon,

We have talked before. I can send you print screens or anything you want to proof that
wimax is just as good as ADSL. I never have sync problems, weather doesn't have any noticeable affect.

PS: You going to the RTB Show? I'm going just for the beer... :-)

Yes, if possible just screen shots where latencies show on servers, for which games you play (FPS games preferably, also MMORPG where servers are overseas), thanks :)

@SharkBait : No, I'm not going, waste of money really... already heard from people it is a waste :( Nothing really worthwhile to do / see lol :P

Anyway, don't know WHEN Wimax will be launched in Rustenburg, Vodacom / Telkom tells me different stories for every person I ask....

I've been playing Americas Army since October on WIMAX, the pings are as good as ADSL, I have never even had a problem in huge storms..........;)

Thanks, Norm :)

Anyway, it does NOT seem that Wimax will be launched in Rustenburg soon, Telkom wants to force me to get ADSL (Im renting ), Vodacom Wimax trial not intended for private guys, ONLY businesses

It is so frustrating, my WISP is THE WORST - 200% worse service than Telkom..

I keep reading that latency is as GOOD as adsl, but is it as STABLE?

WiMax And Gaming

I have WiMAX at home and its perfect, no issues what so ever.

I play WoW on EU server, with shaped web africa account i get 500 - 800ms, with web africa unshaped account I get 250 - 350 ms on average - Me very happy with WiMax, its not the same wireless as 3G, the poor 3d/hsdpa permformace made me get WiMAX since no ADSL is available in my area.

The only thing is - as far as I know - maximum for WiMAX bandwidth is 512kbps although in theory it can go up to 54mbps - according to the guy that installed it - but getting 4mbs WiMAX you looking in the 10's of thousands of rands rental.

Oh another irriation is so far I could not get my router to do the PPoE dialing, so I have ICS setup on a computer, which sucks.

Hope this info helps.

Yes, it does help LOTs thanks.

SO its NOT 3G crap latencies :D also LOTS better than dodgy WISPS

The 512k speed is not that big a problem > especially if you showed that you get 500-800ms ping to WOW, although high, I guess it is playable. Because I played Guild Wars with a ping of 900ms which was still enough.... but anything higher is problems.

Unshaped that much of a difference? WOW did not know lol.

But, why then DONT they want to give you the OPTION if your AREA DOES HAVE ADSL (currently no line where I am renting), to get Wimax? That I can't understand.

I wanted to get ADSL, but there is no telkom lines at all in my area, so they offered it to me, at first I declined because I thought I would then rather get 3G - which I did, and basically wasted R2000+ on that crap.

With 3G (when being connected for more than 10min before the connection disconnects) I got 1200+ (at best of times) ms on WOW.

Then while surfing (not on 3G though :o) I came across forum about WiMAX and decided that I would take my chances since nothing can be worse than 3G, and hey the rest is history.

Dont think "wireless internet" with WiMAX, think "ADSL that happens not to have copper to my local exchange internet" :D

Well, that is my experiance with WiMAX anyway.

Nicely explained there :D

So this thread has given several different people with the SAME thoughts.. they are ALL happy with Wimax, which is very good news :)

IF only I could get it

BravoDrie has a good explanation and another thing I saw, the WiMAX connects at 100Mbps
to the base station... Not that it has anything to do with the latencies, but they should be able to give us higher throughput.

I wanna see a graph used by something like HLSW (a game browser) tha shows a constant pinging of the server. That'l convince me that this service is decent for FPS games :)

Consistency & low ping is the key, I agree. But as I have already gathered here, its WAAAAAY better than HSDPA and ALSO WOULD be alot better than this POS WISP that I use :mad:
