Dam, that must be some serious battery power going on there!

So the irony is that 2010 will bring us new undersea cables but no power to be able to use them :D

One wonders why the Generator(s) were not working, after all thats what they are there for? Any details? No fuel?
 
I think the IS UPS’s must be monstrous – would not mind one of those for my machine :D Well done to them for averting disaster – never easy to make quick decisions in those circumstances.

Not certain what caused generator failure – it does however happen. I am sure they will be ready for Eskom today :D

From what I understand, The cooling systems for the generator(s) failed.
This forced the generator(s) to electronically lock and shut down to prevent any damage to the generators themselves.

But I do stand to be corrected.

As for the UPS's, they normally will only hold a data center for about 30minutes.
They are rather large, call it about 1.4m wide, 2m high and about 0.8m deep and there are multiple ones.

Genset failure happened to the one office block next to my offices.

Seems to be working today.

Hope we get ours soon. (bleh)

ditto about the UPS'es - seen a couple of those bigjobs, and they're dangerous if you don't know what you're doing...
 
I don't know they should be telling the whole world of their faulty generators, and are they not redundant?

Just sounds like dodgy risk management. For as many clients they have that run mission critical ops from IS infrastructure, EVERYTHING should be redundant.

They are redundant, they have three generators (I think two of them run when there is a power outage, and one is a backup).

This problem wasn't a generator failure, it was a cooling system failure which caused the generators to shut themselves down to prevent any damage to the generators themselves.
Either:
The generators overheat and fail and you have downtime
or
The generators shut themselves down to prevent damage and you have downtime.

As far as I know, they are N+1 certified.

What would you guys recommend as a UPS: that would shut 1 PC down (Look at my PC's Specs with 3 CRT Monitors) Then, after my pc is powered down fine, to run 1 or 2 Energy Savers for about 2 to 4 hours... ?

How many KVA ?
 
I have been on the grand tour of IS Bryanston - **** impressive.
3 moerse diesel gennies, water tanks and a contract with a fuel company to ship in fuel.

Seems the problem was with the aircool. Bet you that will be redundant before long.

2-3KVA for a cheap brand UPS (everything not an APC or MGE)

1KVA for a Quality UPS Like an APC smart-ups SUA1000i

You need to spend about R3000 for a 1KVA good one.

There is the new APC SC1000i that is quite a bit cheaper (they lost most of the big business features like the smartslot.

Great thing about APC UPS's is they are natively supported by Windows built-in UPS module.

most new UPS'es have network cards in - so several servers can poll the UPS regularly, or the UPS can notify several servers at once.

Prefer the NIC models above the serial port models.
