MTN 3.6 Mbps HSDPA arrives

This is indeed exciting news and I am lucky enough to have a 7.2 Mbps modem to test the service (a few other guys won some of these modems sponsored by MTN at last year’s conference). We will try to bring you some real-life results within the next few weeks (7.2 Mbps only available in Cape Town at this state).

My only gripe is that I don't see a need to differentiate pricing based on speed - to hell with promotional periods, make the equal pricing thing permanent!

I agree, its like they trying to lure people in by making it the same price to start with and then slapping a big South African "R" figure on it after the "Trial" period (and every one is using it already).
If you going to charge more for speed then charge less for Bandwidth, having to pay for both is not cool!

Unfortunately all this speed means nothing at the current rate of data. So I can now finish a 2GB bundle of R389 in 76 minutes?

Nice, so MTN can extort more money from people when they reach the end of their data bundle and are forced to pay out-of-bundle rates until the 30 day window is up.
We actually don't need it faster right now, we just need to be able to use it more!!!!!

Interesting that the backhaul is still trailing in many places - I see the UK recently upgraded to 100Mbps to homes. I know this cannot compare to a wired service in many respects, but it is being marketed as an alternative to the current wired options. Of course it's obvious that they still rely on Telkom for backhaul, so no prizes for guessing how long that will take.

The fact that MTN is upgrading to faster speeds is great etc. but the idea of affordable broadband should always be the focus. Having fast HSDPA while you move around with your laptop is attractive but paying gazillions for data bundles makes it all a bit irrelevant to the average consumer.
