ADSL – SAIX versus IS

What a choice: bad or pathetic.

Are we ever going to see real progress?

The Telkom shaped ADSL account produced an average download speed of 1553 Kbps from international servers and 3478 Kbps from local servers.

The IS account in comparison showed an average speed of 122 Kbps from international servers and 417 Kbps from local servers.

Why can I, on my SAIX 384, download at 320Kbps during office hours, but IS is 122Kbps on a 4Mbps line? How can they sell a product like this? This is crazy! Are you sure your tests were accurate, rpm? Is it because of all the businesses that are using IS?

Dude, that's why it is called "shaped". They purposely slow it down during the day. Your line speed does not matter here, its the ISP that causes the problem (its like having a Ferrari on a South African free-way, it is only allowed to go a max of 120km/h even though you know it is capable of going much faster). I agree that it is pathetically slow but that is how our country runs at the moment. Shaping is the name of the game.

What is nice to see is how the latency speeds have come down. 245 ms is way better than Telkom’s 358 ms. That is quite a useful step up.

Servers used for testing latency?

For local latency during business hours Telkom once again reigned supreme with an average ping time of 37 ms to local servers – far superior to IS’s 121 ms. When it came to international latency the result was however reversed – at 237 ms IS easily outperformed SAIX’s 347 ms.

Which servers were used for this testing?

well, with regard to latency. On the SGS AGASA Crysis Server this weekend, The minimum latency for my SAIX account was 55ms (it hung around there and spiked now and then), whereas the minimum latency for my IS account (local only) was 35ms (it too hung around there and spiked intermittently, however I dont think the IS account even peaked to 55ms). That says alot in my opinion (Both of these accounts are normal accounts). IS was the clear winner for me.

The only thing that sounds even remotely interesting in that article is the international latency. 100ms improvement over SAIX could be of interest to some. Skype, Games etc.

We need to see the actual tests done as it is all a bit meaningless. There is also the issue that some ppl have pipes that terminate in the US and some in Europe so a traceroute should be included. What size access line were you using? How were the downloads done, ftp or http? What are the cost differences between the services? I have to say dependent on price...the IS service is not looking great at the moment but I do note the article mentioned there 'might' be some improvement.

yay? now why would i want to get this service, already have a 30 gig local accout for R130 why works good

The only thing that IS have going for themselves is their "uncapped" accounts. If Telkom/SAIX were to ever offer such a service, I would move over in a heartbeat, even though it would be going to the "devil"

My question is whether the "unshaped" portion of the test was still done against the same SAIX shaped account or whether they used a SAIX unshaped account.

If the test was done against the IS account during the "unshaped" period while SAIX was with a shaped account then it wouldn't have been a fair comparison.

You could download at the speed of light , what does it help ? You just get capped quicker ... Yes lower latencies are great for gamers , but one thing too take note of is which of the two is more constant . Telkom/saix is more reliable , but we need to see what tests they ran to make a more informed decision . Having to switch account or only get to use accounts during certain hours of the day is not a positive .

Wow, so what you're saying is IS Fibre is worse than their crappy satellite international traffic. Didn't think that was possible.

I hate Telkom, but SAIX kicks IS's ass.

This is stupid i mean saix is shaped but they still win is shaped or unshaped....

Everyone at IS is so in love with themselves whereas everyone at Telkom knows they're useless (that's why they refer to their network as "the best effort network").

This should be a much needed kick in the ass for IS.Perhpas IS should spend less time mocking Telkom and more time on their own services.
