proposed electricity regulations for comment

End user or customer with monthly consumption of 500kWh and above must be on time of use tariff not later than 2010.

What exactly is a "time of use tariff"?

Peak hours / off peak.
Looking at power alert etc, peak is 5am-10pm.

Enjoy.

That 500KW is a disgrace.

Imagine a bachelor with no regard for power consumption - he may use 480KW.
A family of 6 may use 510 by being ultra frugal.
Who DESERVES to pay more?

This "system" is rubbish.

from what i can make out time of use is that if you use 500kwh or more then you pay more for using electricity at a specific time of day than you would at other times of the day

"Download session invalid." . . . . anyone want to host it somewhere else? :o

if you tell me where else i can upload it to i will drop it there. still got cap left

Yeah. Let us do some sums - assume 25% more, and R1 per KWh (nice and easy).

Bachelor above will pay R480 a month - even though he lives in a bachelor flat, alone. The fact that he leaves the aircon / heater on all day, even when not there, matters not to guavamint.

Family, above, shiver in the cold some nights to save power. They share bath water. Still, since they are so many, they manage to use 510 - no matter the sacrifice. Being a family of two adults and 4 small children, most of their consumption is during the day - not feasible to feed and bath kids at 2am....
Let us say 75% is day time use, geyser and washing done overnight.
75% of 510 is 382.5 - that is @ R1.25 = 478.13
25% is 127.50 @ R1 = R127.50
Total: R605.80

So, 30KW extra is costing the frugal family R125.80.

Hardly fair, is it?

Another view is:
One person (bachelor) is using 480KW
6 people are each using 85KW - and being punished for that.

Hopefully at the end of the day we need not be alarmed with "limits"...if Escom recovers...well, er...HOPEFULLY :)

lol - you missed the REAL point.
The REAL point is to get more than the 14% price hike they did get.
;):p

How exactly can this be implemented with prepaid meters?

Yeah, I wondered about that too. I see two possible answers:
1) You need to buy peak units, and off peak units
2) The peak tariff will be double the off peak, so during peak time you lose two units for each one that you lose during off peak.

Neither option really makes sense.

I remember around 15 years ago there was a project in (then) Everyday Electronics that was aimed at UK households to use "off peak" power.

IIRC, it picked up a signal from the mains (almost like a ripple controller) and would then switch on your washing machine and whatever else was connected to it.

The main difference was that, at that time, the UK wanted to encourage "off peak" usage by only charging around half the "normal" price. They did that not really because of a power shortage during the day, but a huge oversupply at night (late night and early morning), so tried to balance the load...

Maybe Eskom should try more "carrot" and less "stick".. At my house, we run quite a few things at 2am now (timer on the washing machine, dishwasher, pool pump etc.) out of free will, but if you get discounts for doing that, more people would go that route and it'll help balance the load throughout the day....

But then, yeah, this is Eskom.... :(

/me bends over
/me drops pants
/me shows Eskom his opinion of them and their proposals
