Seacom rejects Nepad as partner

Nepad and Eassy are nothing but government pipe dreams. Seacom will be the ONLY cable that will ever get finished and I'll bet everything on that.

Eassy and Nepad's proposed wholesale prices are way more than Seacom's in any case.

Infraco was a mistake from the very beginning. Now we taxpayers are going to pay for a cable that will not even get build in our lifetimes.

I read that in the Business Report this morning. I think I started cheering in the middle of the coffee shop, not quite sure, just remember a few people looking at me oddly

Seacom will not partner with a cable being developed by 12 African governments until it makes economic sense to its shareholders.

First of all, Nepad is NOT being developed as nothing has been done yet. This cable is just a stupid fantasy.

Second of all, thinking 12 African governments will agree on anything is just as insane. No thought whatsoever has been put into this "project".

Third of all, and the most stupid of all in my opinion, how will a government driven project inspire competition and price wars? Everything that's wrong with our telco industry stems from government involvement. They are just trying to line their own pockets once again.

They can go stick Nepad. I'm not paying for that.

Herlihy said Seacom could not wait for this initiative as international demand for cables had skyrocketed. But the company had "dynamic" interaction with the South African government.

YES!! AT LAST!! Somebody in South Africa understands that there is a massive pent up demand for bandwidth in this country. These guys are really cool. They should buy Neotel!

I'm really starting to take a liking to Seacom!

You're not the only one.
Me just wonder what this government will do on the end to enforce their whatever rules and regulations to bring Seacom on par with Telkom/Neotel. Something will eventually give?

The one good thing about seacom is their transparency so far. Without any "gun to the head" threats they've given deadlines, not just "imminents"; they’ve shown wholesale prices (so retailers can’t give us some cock ‘n bull about how expensive bandwidth is, when we know what they’re paying) and they are showing on which side of the fence they stand as far as involvment with government projects is concerned.

Big up for them so far

Maybe clever, they will supply most bandwidth for 2010 maybe? Telkom will hopefully follow the HD-DVD route.

Dear Dept. of Constipation

Hands off Seacom!

The Nepad cable might have to use arugula instead of cable if it's ever going to be financially viable. They simply cannot compete with efficient private sector initiatives. But we should be kind, they have to budget for corruption. After all it is an african cable, so how can there not be corruption.

Thankfully, the undersea cables are not copper. Otherwise the tsotsies will learn to scuba dive - which of course will be very bad for the marine environment, bearing in mind how bad they smell and the diseases they're carrying.

Old Thabo must be pretty pissed. Nepad was his big *initiative*, and it amounts to nothing.

Thabo's pipe dream utopia got spurned trying to ruin our only real chance for affordable bandwidth.
