[Bandwidth theft/abuse]: Inter'l Down, Local Slow, TIT Anomalies

Hi all,

I've been experiencing major problems (down or slow) over the last few days (last days of Feb and the first days of this month) with international connectivity. How are you all finding it? (I'm in Edenvale, JHB)

Local has also been slow and intermittent.

Then regarding the TI tracker: just look at this obscure screenshot.

What is happening?! I'll have you know that those bandwidth details are for an account which I have not even been using this month (because I'm finishing off my topup account)!! Do you think it's bandwidth theft? What is going on?

I've contacted Telkom's abuse crowd.

[EDIT: They subsequently replied. All my problems can be traced to bandwidth theft. See here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=1571425#post1571425]

Cheers,
David

So far it seems to be running very smoothly here, but wouldn't know about last night, as no one was here at the school.

SAIX 4gb shaped through our ISP FrogFoot.

Guys check this out: today's stats so far. That is insane!

Nobody has been home all day except my mom and she has read ONE EMAIL the whole day. Can someone please explain what's going on? Do you think someone is somehow stealing my bandwidth? How do they do that?

My mom is on the phone to telkom now waiting for assistance.

[EDIT: Telkom subsequently responded to my problem. They can all be traced to bandwidth theft. See here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=1571425#post1571425]

Someone possibly using the account?

Check for concurrent logins.

Thanks again. It looks like it is just my IP address has been using it (checked it in the router config). Here are the details for today:

Someone connected from 00:51:20 this morning till 14:13:59 and downloaded 1 531 838 309 bytes (1.4gb). All the computers in my house were off from 11:30pm last night. Anyone have any ideas as to what's possibly going on? Do you think one of my neighbours is leeching off my wireless? Should I enable the WEP key?

Have just turned the WEP key on. Would you recommend 64 or 128 bit encryption?

The key doesn't agree with my dad's Cicso laptop and the Odyssey client he has installed. Will have to figure out how to get that to work.

Check out the new stats for today.

Down from nearly 3gb "Total Usage for March" to now a more realistic 1.175 GB. Nevertheless, how is there such a discrepancy between "Total Bandwidth used" and "Total Usage for March"? Am I the only one who is getting such obscure readings on the tracker.

Use 128-bit. The longer the better as it will increase the difficulty for crackers getting through.
