Anatomy of South African decay

What happened in 2000/2001 to cause the average matric exemption rate to increase and stabilize somewhat?
 
The stats are available n stats.sa and if you really want to have a look, go look at maths and science breakdown, the pass rate amongst black students is abysmal yet we throw so much of the countries budget at education. People really need to look at how this money is being spent because more money wont improve the situation.
We expect all these engineers, ca's etc to just fall out of the woodwork, it aint going to happen. Something is wrong with the system, you cannot blame the students

I have been doing my BSC for 15 years (yeah yeah :D ), and it is pathetic these days.
When I started, even first year courses required written assignments to qualify for the exam, and you had to earn credits by "passing them".

The 3rd year courses I am doing this year (my last!!), require one multiple choice assignment to be submitted (yes - I can score ZERO and still qualify for exams).

Standards are WAY down.

Not for matriculants it wasnt AFAIK. The pass rate and exemption rate were becoming abyssmal so maybe they just lowered the standards of the exams then?

Twice as easy, ten times more confusing. End result is lower pass rate at a lower standard.

My little sis is really suffering with that freakin OBE. They'd learn something and then next week the teacher would announce "Everything you learned last week has been scrapped from the curriculum".:( The teacher are just as lost with the new requirements.
 
If you have to compare today's St10 to 1994's St10, what would you suggest is the equivalent? ( ie todays st10 = st6 in 1994? )

throwing money at education wont solve basic issues like enough teachers, or textbooks arriving on time before the school year starts. provinces need to be held accountable..but that word doesn't exist in the ANC dictionary. matric results arent an indicator of the quality of the education system esp. since a ridiculous % of students who start school actually finish in matric.

this gread 9 "get out of school as soon as you can" exam and system is complete rubbish. i do wish that more money was allocated to bursaries and scholarships, and that capacities at tertiary institutions were doubled e.g. uct should cater for 35000+ students instead of the 20000 and the national budget should provide the funds to cater for the additional capacity

The problem is the money is being stolen and squandered.
