Content is king in battle

I like the sound of map sharing. If there is some kind of peer review/quality vote for updates it'll be great.
I use a Garmin GPS with maps at the moment - have done for a long while - and its a fabulous aid to navigating.
It is interesting that in the UK now, people are now relying completely on the device as their navigator, not as an aid to their navigating. Some of the consequences are:
- For road safety, people fiddling with / constantly staring at the electronic display rather than the road.
For the individuals themselves:
- People no longer know any routes and are totally lost without their 'Tom Tom'.
- When a device has malfunctioned on a journey and, not only could the driver not continue, but they had no idea where they were.
- And people seem to place complete trust in the device that it is leading them to where they want to go - if you accidentally select the wrong destination (right street, wrong city is apparently a common error) and totally suspend your brain for the journey you get quite a surprise on 'arrival'.
So whilst the content is great, it also important that the designers of these systems build in mechanisms to help users with the issues above. Perhaps:
1) Some form of periodic update of where you are near ('you are on the N2 passing George...')
2) And and update on the journey ('only 342km to go to Bob's in Port Elizabeth...')
Something like that might either bug the hell out of you, jolt you in to remembering that Bob actually lives in Port Shepstone, and when the machine dies that the last place you passed was George as you reach for the paper road atlas.
