Where to get Linux distributions

Gothan, 7.10 is getting obsolescent with 8.04 coming is just over 10 days! Good to see you use Linux! ;)

Hope it'll be a smash hit! :D

/me can't wait :D

On second thoughts, maybe I'll need to wait as world+dog+BillG will be downloading the latest and the newest at the same time, thus clogging up the intartubes...

I know, I know. But I am still getting 7.10 to work, when I am happy with that I will go to 8.04

Isnt there a local distributor where I can just order the dvd from? I dont want to download over 4 gigs again

I am going to wait a year before I install 8.04 so I can get all the service packs etc.

Oh wait - not Vista, nm.

:D

I am testing its beta, that's a much more refined version of their previous releases for sure. Some minor bugs especially with wireless networking and a couple of random freezes with a certain hardware set, but it dwarfs Vista and the like with flying colours. And my word, the desktop experience is sleek! I am excited and also can't wait for the final release.

There you go, http://www.fosscds.co.za R39 for the 8.04 DVD - just wait two weeks for the final release. I ordered from them a year ago or so and it worked fine.

But maybe you should anyway dump it and download a CD iso. The software repositories change quite often, so it might not be worth while getting the whole DVD, when you can download it on ADSL.

Enjoy it anyway, whatever you decide.

Thanks will check it out

So destroying my thread for yours, oh I see how the distros fall here!!

Oh yes, you can also get linux distros at ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.zaThat is where I got kubuntu 7.10 dvd iso, and there is a ton more

Or this one : http://ubuntu.mirror.ac.za/ubuntu-cdimage/kubuntu/releases/7.10/release/

My humble apologies Gothan! I am really sorry. I only realised my mistake after I went and deleted it. I thought it was post whoring, when in fact it was a celebration of the new section...

I owe you one! :o

We have a HUGE amount of Distros available on Jawug (Each user seems to have their own tastes, and have collected lots of Linux/BSD - Which are available for all on the network!

We have a couple of Repo's too (Debian, Ubuntu, Arch)

Must.join.jawug.

(Although, if I did it would be goodbye to my social life, fwiw. :o)

I get all my distro's and most of my updates from ftp://ftp.up.ac.za
It's of course the easiest way to go if you study at Tuks. Although not an official mirror it is about 3 days behind the other mirrors but then on the other hand I can now get all the updates I would otherwise pay for (via bandwidth) for free and at 10MB/s

I am based in Cape Town and the speed of ftp://ftp.up.ac.za/ is generally better than the other local mirrors. ftp://ftp.sun.ac.za/ is the worst!

Tuks (University of Pretoria) has a 4Mb connection to the Rest of South Africa. Sun is if I remember correctly, in Cape Town, which should then be a lot faster, technically speaking, because they have a 10Mbps connection. Thus I find the speed difference strange.

You really ought to just get all your stuff from mirror.ac.za. It has recently been upgraded to a distributed cluster so you automatically download from the cluster closest to you. Each instance of mirror.ac.za is plugged directly into a core router of the TENET (university) network - I think with a GigE connection. You can't go wrong there :D
