Microsoft wins out against pirates

I have no sympathy for businesses that are profiting from the sale of illegal software but why do they always have to put a spin on the situation?

The software industry is a significant economic driver and the study showed spending on hardware, software and IT services in SA was expected to have reached R61bn last year. The IT industry employs more than 355000 people and for every R1 that Microsoft earned last year, partners working with Microsoft would have earned R9,69.

Yes very interesting, but hardware and IT services are actual irrelevant to the discussion. And how many of the 355000 people working in the IT industry are software developers and how many of those are partnered with MS?
Looks to me as if MS are intentionally misrepresenting the scope of the problem.

However, software piracy was threatening the industry. The study reported that piracy of business applications in SA cost commercial software publishers R1,12bn in 2006.

BS unless you can prove that the users of the pirated software would have actually bought the software if piracy was not an option.

Again BS. Ignorance and suspicion (created by MS) of free and open-source software is the major hurdle to realising the potential of the information economy in SA and Africa.

Thought it funny when he said, a virus wiping the hard drive, that dirty hard drive :sick: But seriously that's pretty retarded selling machines with pirated software, wonder what they were charging 4 an installation of windows tho, they prob coulda made more cash doing it the right way but on the other hand people will pay 4 pirated stuff & when they get no support report the company. So it's not entirely the sellers, the consumers are to blame as well.......
 
Unfortunately some people think they are buying the software when they are not.

what he said about (upgradability and ESPECIALLY the virus!) was a piece of junk!
 
Microsoft should be thanking them. The alternative is for those places to have preinstalled linux and open office.

100% Spot On. Same goes with games and all other digital media! Atm Sony cannot blame piracy for its low ps3 game sales figures...But as soon as the PS3 hacked they will be singing that merry "Piracy is costing us" song. Yes some legit users will stop buying originals and go with copies, yet they are some folk who will play a game first and decide whether they deem the game to be worth the R600.

I saw at incredible corruption they selling Vista Ultimate for R5000 :rolleyes:

but i find that "for ever 1 rand made MS made, the companies made R9.69". Wonder how much the ones not partnered with MS made? And just logicly speaking, if you make a profit of R9.69 and MS made R1 off the products, that means pirate companies can make R10.69 :eek:

This just shows linux is the way to go :p

The spin is really nasty. The correct way of looking at it is that for every R10 you sell, you have to give Microsoft R1. That means that companies are losing out on 10% of their revenue to MS. Thats one mean tax. I would imagine that the R9.69 figure also includes services for open source installations etc.

Looking at it the MS way, I could easily say that for every R1 that my company earned, my partners etc earn't R1000000 because my sales are much lower. Therefore it's in my partners interest to rather sell my product.

They actually go about it in quite a nasty way. They call up your sales people and pretend to be a client wanting to purchase something. They then plead that the price is too high and can't something be organised. Now a unscrupulous salesman can get you into a lot of trouble. Fortunately the guy they called on our side said, "No, we don't do that". MS then sent a token product to us.
 
selling stuff with pirated software is just a bad idea.somewhere it's going to backfire

hehe... I noticed the big Pirate's stock slipped a little today!

Better go after some more of the Crime kingpins and Drug Lords who fund their criminal gangs on the back of software piracy! ;)
 
Microsoft approves of piracy over the use of linux.. Enough said.
 
I have an awesome resolution to this whole piracy thing. Burn Micro$oft to the ground and rise Linux to where it should be (especially after the release of the Vista-chomping 8.04)

It's about the relative cost. Software and hardware are miles cheaper in the First World (especially given relative incomes) to get the volumes going while the developing world gets ripped off to provide the cream on corporate profits. When the SP3 is the same price here as it is in the States, I might consider buying one. And R600 for a game when the (still expensive) PC game is R250-300? Make mine a pirate please.
I bet if MS halves it's software prices in China they'll more than double their sales.
