The new office wars

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Sure lots of people want to see the end of MS, but would it be such a good idea to replace them with an even bigger giant?
 
I've just recently migrated to OpenOffice. One day I'll rid my PCs completely of the beast :D

That would be $10 for a website site registration, but even that goes to a third party [Godaddy] so I guess my answer would have to be zero.

But the point I am trying to make is that with placing all our info in Google's hands we are showing great trust in them, and if their systems are penetrated some people will be very sorry.
 
Some analysts have suggested that Microsoft has an unhealthy paranoia about Google — evidenced, they say, in its audacious US$40bn-plus hostile bid for Yahoo. Watching the frenetic pace of innovation at Google, I believe the paranoia is entirely justified.

I've never even tried Google docs.. :p and I most probably never will.. :p

Frankly I prefer "carrying my docs around on a flashdrive" , I am concerned about my documents, thus I will always ensure that they are reliably backed up and secured (to my satisfaction), to Google I'm just one of their billion odd users - I cannot believe that they place the same importance on my documents as I do.

Most likely someone will tell me that I can also make local backups of my Google docs.. but if I have to do that then it defies the purpose of having "online documents".. :p

It's like having an "out of house fridge" where some company looks after your food storage for you.. :sick:

Of course there's also the conspiracy angle to the whole thing.. :eek: :rolleyes:
They already have most of my email, although there's nothing terribly useful for them there. ;)


Oh and final point, is it OSS? :p

I don't like Google Mail anymore. I tried to send an encrypted mail - encrypted it with winzip - and they told me it is invalid file. No it is not invalid, it is encrypted so they CANT READ it which must be terribly upsetting.
 
I can't see how companies will embrace it, since the documents are not confidential anymore if you put it in Google.

The home user may use it... and then again, they might not.
