Neotel’s NeoConnect Prime reviewed

Lastly, many consumers are going to demand a handset that is more mobile. We expect Neotel to introduce handsets at some point that work on both the GSM/3G standards used by the cellular operators and on its CDMA2000 network. Imagine a device that places a call over whichever network happens to be cheapest. That’d be something worth subscribing to.

Man i think i expected to much from neotell and they are actually disappointing me at the moment.
 
yes, you expected too much, but magic is best left to the books. a year from now though - we can get out the baseball bats if that cap is still there!

good download speed though!

Yes weren't we told a long time ago they will initially have "high-speed" internet with this EV-DO thing and then later on have "true broadband" via WiMAX and DSL? So what were you expecting really?
 
The bad quality on the Neotel to cell is most likely due to the horrible quality provided on the cell networks back haul.

When last did you have a clear cell-to-cell call?

Yep, that's exactly what I was worried about, it's basically about 30kbits/s too slow for a decent quality Skype-Skype call, and I'm not about to give up Skype to satisfy the NeoGhost.

Ya, that is a big problem, if their premium offering isn't even going to offer decent Skype calls :(

Hold on, 128kbps is in theory I believe...even on a 4M line I get max 42kbps upload...so 50kbps is standard AFAIK...but then I could be wrong hey...

If you're only getting an upload speed of 42kbits/s on a 4Mbits/s [downlink] ADSL line, then I suggest you log a fault with the monopolistic beast - it is supposed to be getting a minimum uplink speed of 256kbits/s with 384kbits/s uplink speed being the maximum.

Also, 50kbits/s is far below standard, for example, on Vodacom's HSPA network, speed test results from numerous forumites show that Vodacom's own network is capable of delivering near 384kbits/s uplink speeds most of the time - although it is due to the symmetrical nature of the backhaul links and the fact that most HSPA modems in use on the network are hardware limited to 384kbits/s, so there is much more uplink bandwidth available to be shared. Vodacom's HSPA network being just one example of how 50kbits/s uplink from NeoGhost is really pathetic and below average.

ok thats not to good but you can still share your internet as long as your pc has a ethernet port . i am wondering if this up speed isn't old issue of KB and kb again cause 50kbps is 6.25K/s which is slower than isdn which does 7K/s! and that versus 384adsl which does 128kbps 16K/s

Why can't they just make the upl at 128kbps and then people will take it!
 
guys hold on on the upload... are you talking about kilobits or kiloBytes... My source at Neotel say that they are talking average of 500kilobits per second (kbps) and not kiloBytes per second (kBps)... will however confirm that today again and post

That particular call centre agent that I spoke to didn't seem to know the difference between latency and uplink|upload speed, and when he finally twigged that I was not asking about latency, he said that he did not have the uplink speed info available to him.

Well I've just called again, and basically the same story - the guy [a different guy to last time] rattled on about the downlink speed and didn't even know that there is such a thing as an uplink|upload speed, he did say he would call me back, but then so did the previous guy, oh and I should add that this particular guy got his kbits/s and kBytes/s mixed up - he told me that I could expect an average "of between" 20kbits/s and 50kbits/s...:rolleyes:

Pathetic.

Uplink speeds averaged around 50Kbit/s, with the best performance achieved on a connection to London.

In basic telephony, the device does not score as well. Though calls to fixed lines were exceptionally good, calls to mobile phones left much to be desired.

Two more reasons to skip Neotel until they come up with a real offer, not that we needed any more reasons.

OK. I like the fact that competition is coming in.
There is one thing I just dont like and this is this statement:
"Neotel has opted for a #FIXED-WIRELESS# solution based on a technology known as CDMA2000 EV-DO."

WTF is fixed-wireless?!
I play games online and want perfect constant latency which WIRELESS does not give and FIXED-line gives.
I understand that you cant carry the phone on your person thats why its called fixed, but that is just confusing.

Similarly there are ALOT of ISPs out there claiming their connections i unshaped then in the fine print they say no p2p!!
Drive me nuts, people can just throw words around to confuse the unsuspecting...
