Nicholas Negroponte’s accidental revolution

The computers were meant to run off the free Linux operating system, but Negroponte came under pressure from Microsoft and its chairman, Bill Gates, to ship the machines with Windows
hey? how does uncle Billy come into this?

hey? how does uncle Billy come into this?

Uncle Billy wants to make money, and should the laptops start to use Linux, his beloved Windows (and money) will be excluded - which means less revenue for Bill.

Remember, it just isn't only Windows, it is Office and other M$ applications as well.

Pity Negroponte caved in.

Negroponte aimed his machine at school kids.

Once they started working, they would have been comfortable with opensource systems like Linux and OpenOffice.

And the thought of this made Bill Gates shudder.

The only reason why MS is doing as well as it does, is because it holds a knowledge and skills monopoly in the international workforce.

At least the laptops can't run Vista :D

Unca Billy is a bit of a philanthropist. Spends most of his time giving his money away setting up charities and the likes. This is right up his street. You prolly find the reasons they agreed is that Bill injected some cash into the project as well.

I say drop the $188 to $185 and use Linux. You won't even need anti-virus.... and there won't be issues....

Three grand? An impulse buy?

An impulse buy on three grand? Someone's been smoking pot again.

failure

its hard to believe this story. nicolas's main talent that he is a marketing genius. he has failed dismally with this one laptop per school project. instead of acknowleging it, he feeds us this horse rubbish about him indavertently creating a new market. dheap computers have been getting cheaper for decades now. negroponte has little do with it.

Eee~?

Okay, now pay attention. You might learn something. Geeks, double time with the attention here please: you will need this most?! Okay, are we synced? Good.

So you are a geek, and you happened to be in school. Girls all around, but it's like you have repellent in your deodorant...or sweat perhaps? So how do you, a geek, get the attention of a girl? Don't know? Well, here is how:

Get an Eee Pc. It will change your social life, and I can almost guarantee that you would have a conversation with a girl in at least a days time.

Don't believe me? Well, I work in a school as an IT guy. We recently got 4 Eee's, impulse buy(hehe) of the lady who is in charge of the IT from the schools side. We have decent Wifi coverage at the school, so since we got them I have walked around with one of these at the school on the odd occasion, and this is not a lie: 5 out of the 7 or what times I have done so I have been stopped BY GIRLS with whom I usually only deal around the IT side, and been asked about these Eee's. I personally find them next to useless, a little more usable than a PDA, but too big to compete, and definitely underpowered. But every time I have them out, some guys think it's cool, but for some odd reason, it's like Axe deodorant in the commercials...It attracts women! I kid you not!

So personally, useless as they are, you might end up speaking to a girl, geek:-P

So to summarize, I do think it will make a mark in the market, not on the IT side as much as the girl who wants to sit at Mugg & Bean and shop from there. Not my cup of tea, but definitely some persons cup size if you get my drift:D

History does indeed repeat itself. this is the same ole tactic Gates used with IBM back in the day
