TomTom and Rectron partner

could be interesting, TT's products from what i have heard easy to update unlike garmin

Let's hope something happens with this. I bought a Tom Tom about a year and a half ago when they were being sold by MTN. At the time I bought it, they told me that the "Safety Camera" feature would be online in about 2 months time. Well, it's been a year and a half and still nothing. Garmen have it, so I don't see why not. It's a good product, but I have not been impressed with the back-up, support and "online" features so far in SA.

Now this is good news. Hopefully with some descent SA backing, TomTom can finally come into it's own in this country.

I purchased a Tom Tom XL1 from Makro some 2 months ago. My wife has a Garmin Nuvi 350 (I also had one, but it was stolen). Frankly, the Tom Tom user interface is not on a par with the Garmin. Most importantly, the maps are outdated (compared to Garmin's).

If I had a choice, I'd trade my Tom Tom any day for a Garmin. Tom Tom have some serious work ahead of them if they want to capture market share.

It's a good product, but I have not been impressed with the back-up, support and "online" features so far in SA.

That is because prior to Rectron taking over the distribution and support it was Core who were responsible and we all know that they are not any good at support functions.

Here's to hoping that Rectron can pull something out the bag, but I have a feeling that they are not the ideal partners for this type of product.

I would have rather seen a small distributor like Avnic (sp?) (who do Garmin) take on this sort of responsibility as it would have allowed for a more focussed approach.

I have dealt with Avnic. Can't say I liked them or their prices. Wantitall helped us out back then at 1/4 the price...

Tom Tom is worldwide leader in GPS systems. I purchased a Tom-Tom in germany, after my last garmin failed. Tom Tom picks up sattelites much faster and re routes much quicker than
my garmin ever did. Granted the map i purchased for south africa still needs alot of attention. Rating any gps device on south african based maps will never reveal its true functionality. In germany i got a warning of every single traffic camera, spot on, details on what speed restrictions apply to what sections of the autobahn etc.. GPS systems in south africa are quite frankly useless and a nuisance to use

I went from a Garmin Nuvi 200 to TT 1XL - and the only thing I miss is the "safety" cameras...
The screen is better, and it has a freakin' QWERTY keyboard, which NONE of the Garmins have...
The mount just sucks big time...
