Tip of the postbag

Bad journalism, especially in a financial publication...

But the fact remains that Amazon.com's shipment through the US Postal Service (USPS) to SA accounts for around 15% of the US$1,1m/year (R8,8m) the USPS pays SAPO.

Simply put: The decision by Amazon to reroute its shipment to SA to a private courier will wipe off around R1,3m from SAPO's bottom line.
er no. It may wipe it off the top line, but it impossible that 15% of R8.8 Million revenues received could be responsible for that much profit. Also, R1.3 Million Rand's worth of business on turnover of R3.5 Billion is pretty negligible...

Please note that I don't support the SAPO as I think that they are pretty useless, but journalists should know their facts before writing this kind of crud.

I hope the guy(s) who usually liberates my shipments from their packaging have a good night's rest...

About 50% of the mail that comes my way from the US or UK does not make it here. Most documents do, but rarely anything more expensive.

"That's according to SAPO CE Motshoanetsi Le***a. She says it paid out around R650 000 in claims for its financial year to end-2007 against revenue of R3,5bn. "It's quite a negligible figure," she declares"

liar! its impossible to claim no insured items and i had reg mail stolen which sapo did
nothing about.

This is the attitude that is holding our country back from its true potential. The true damage being done to our image and level of business confidence is not being considered in the usual display of reckless arrogance by a beneficiary of our new political dispensation.

1 stolen package is 1 too many. R650 000... Yea right... And I'm the Queen of England!

And although the pilferage of parcels is said to have topped its list of complaints, Le***a dismisses the allegation, claiming SAPO's security infrastructure at most of its mail sorting centres was above industry standards.

Postman Andile Ndzwana said he left the bags at two homes while doing his rounds elsewhere and then came back to deliver the mail. He denied having any knowledge of paying the homeless man to deliver the mail for him.

He said when he came back the bags were missing - and he reported it to the Post Office.

Zisiwe Xintolo, who works for the East London Post Office said a case of theft had been reported to the police.

She did confirm however that the bags were left at the two homes as a regular practice.

“If there is no one present at the house we place the letter bags outside and when the residents return home they keep the bags inside the house until we fetch them for delivery,” said Xintolo.

p.s. lol @ Le***a

The question we should once again ask ourselves is, where are SAPO employees going to find presents for their children now?

Jokers i insured a R2000 item and they paid me out R943.00 after 8 months idiots

The advantage of small time postal theft is that it takes the focus of the big thieves, such as the idiots who are mismanaging these big corporations, eg ESKOM, SAPO, TELKOM and SABC.

Zey will get performance bonuses, as the number of thefts drops (less
clearly marked Amazon boxes).

No problems

I've had several items delivered to me from online retailers without any problems. Apart from it taking a little time to get here.

You are just lucky!

I bought a unique item on ebay and it never made it to me - the idiot at the sapo that took it must just know that it is illegal to have it in sa without a permit! Most likely they have a ..... in the s..s that will also turn a blind eye when they see it.

A registered letter has a tracking number but can't be tracked outside SA

I have received all mail posted to me (sometimes slightly damaged) and one overseas letter I posted was lost in transit ( in the country of destination according to the SAPO, but they did pay me the cost of postage and value of contents ie R50).

In addition to existing security infrastructure, Le***a says SAPO has earmarked R52m to be spent on upgrading cameras in most of its mail sorting centres. A further R8m will be spent on vehicle technology to monitor mail in transit

Wonder who's going to complain about those cameras?

When will SAPO stop employing dyslexic people? - IMO that's as much a reason for letters going astray as pilfering [theft] is, and if anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, how many times have you found a letter addressed to a different PO Box in your own PO Box...

that is not a reflection on how few claims they have had, but rather a reflection on how little they pay out

I have probably ordered around 50 products form amazon, and I would say that 80% of those parcels arrive opened- and resealed "for my convenience" fortunately most of the stuff I buy is not very commercial, so they most often pass over it.

but the comments made by the PO are so typical of what we find in this country- nobody wants to admit that there is a problem, because acknowledging that there is a problem just show them up for being the incompetent sods that they are

even though this move by amazon to boycott SA will hurt us as consumers, I really think its a good thing in the long run, maybe just maybe these retards will catch a wakeup

You're right. The way the new post 1994 SA government handles things is by denial and by sweeping the issues under the carpet. Admitting there is a problem would automatically implicate themselves for the incompetency
and corruption. I think the people in SA government are so insulated from
the world opinion (which is rapidly turning against them) that when someone
points out their incompetence they call them racist or a xenophobe or a fear monger/imperialist etc.

I've had 3 items lost - two I think were EMS and one registered mail (or two reg mail and one EMS) and despite the sender each time launching an investigation on his end, the SAPO ignored it. I do know those items left their
countries of origin because only tracking at Singapore POST and Japan POST
mentioned that. Once these items left they were either stolen en route or
lost in South Africa. I've also had parcels OPENED on 2 occasions and
the most expensive item removed each time. As I'm writing this I'm still
waiting almost 5 weeks for an USPS Airmail item (it should take 2-3 weeks max).

SAPO management are incompetent and its an insult for this woman to even
mention such rubbish. I wonder if her performance ever gets evaluated, maybe she should have been fired, long ago?
