Cape Town mayor Helen Zille has accused cellphone giant Vodacom of helping the ANC-controlled Western Cape government to illegally spy on her.

"They handed my full phone records over a period of more than six months to a political opponent engaged in a witch-hunt. It is outrageous.

"They obviously didn't do due diligence of any kind on the legality of the request to hand over my records. It just shows that they have to be a whole lot more careful about protecting their clients' privacy."

Vodacom's chief communications officer, Dot Field, said: "While we understand and respect Ms Zille's concerns, Vodacom received a subpoena from the Erasmus Commission, which was deemed to be a judicial commission of inquiry, and as such, Vodacom provided the information as demanded in terms of the subpoena."

Stop trolling.

The Cape High Court this week ruled that the commission was illegal and unconstitutional. "[Rasool's] only motive on the evidence in establishing the second Erasmus commission must have been to embarrass or discredit political opponents, particularly the DA," Judges Kevin Swain and Chris Nicholson said in their ruling. Commission chair Judge Nathan Erasmus broke the commission's own rules when he gave the report to Rasool, the judgement finds. "Consequently, the information contained in the summary of evidence was obtained by the premier unlawfully."

This is not Zille's first complaint about improper surveillance. She met with Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils earlier this year after learning that the landline at her Rosebank home had been tapped.

I don't think he is trolling. Did Vodacom have a crystal ball that somehow told them the commision is illegal? No, they received a subpoena, and they acted on it.

The DA is just being unreasonable. They would be screaming from the top of their lungs if VC would not provide call records to a judicial enquiry of an ANC official to do "due dilligance".:rolleyes:

Zille has a right to be suspicious given the history, be it Vodacom, TELKOM or whomever.
She has yet to be proven wrong as the Erasumus commision found out ;)

If she is so suspicious, then she must move her business to Cell C or MTN. Not come out and attack a company that was following the letter of the law.;)

Saying it like it is? No bud, you didn't read the article and as a result you missed the part where the request and in fact the entire commission was found to be unconstitutional and illegal. Your comment was standard fare from ANC 'rank and file sheep' - that is, you ignore the High Court opinion and scream "whiner" instead. Baaaaaaaa! Baaaaaaa! Baaaaaaaaa!

The headline is inflated. Of course Vodacom was just acting on a subpoena, but the subsequent High Court ruling vindicates Zille! At the end of the day, Zille has every right to, quote unquote, "whine" about unconstitutional and illegal processes.

The 'selective quoting' you are whinging about is in direct relation to the articles title, about Zille's gripe with Voda.

The link was provided so that everyone could read, and fully consider it for themselves, including the rebuttal.

Leaving the 'political agenda aside', had this been my info for example I would also be mighty peeved at Voda, and for good reason to.
