just wanted to add that, if i create the VPN using a Windows PC...it works perfect...but i need to keep the things simpler and STABLE...so want to use the router.

I don't think you can connect to it from the router, from what I understand about the package.

Setting up OpenWeb's VPN Connection ...

Hello,

I also recently signed up for OpenWeb's 10Gb VPN Account. Was also not connecting to the VPN at all. But the fault was not at OpenWeb's side. It was me not spotting the second e-mail that Keoma sent me.

I was trying to connect with the wrong Username & Password. After trying again with the correct Username & Password I managed to connect to their VPN with no problems.

But the thing is, you can not just set up your Router to connect to your Local Only Account (10Gb). You must first do the following --->

(1) Create a PPPoE [Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet] Internet Connection. This is the connection you will be using to connect your Local Account.

*PPPoE??? = It is used mainly with ADSL services where individual users connect to the ADSL services where individual users connect to the ADSL transceiver (modem) over Ethernet and in plain Metro Ethernet networks.

(2) Create the VPN OpenWeb Connection. Tick the option to create a shortcut on your desktop, for both of these two connections. The PPPoE & the VPN Connection.

Top tip:
When both of these connections have been set up,
Go to -> Start -> Settings -> Network Connection (double Click) on the Network Connection.

Right Click on your OpenWeb VPN Connection Icon -> Properties -> Under the first tab [General] -> Tick the option that says "Dial another connection first". -> Select the OpenWeb - PPPoE Connection. Remeber, the connections must first be correctly set up for you to see the OpenWeb VPN Connection option in the [selection bar].

Next,

Go to the Options tab -> And tick the "Redial if line is dropped" box. I do not no why, but sometimes the VPN Connection drops. If anyone knows why, please let me know. I for one don't.

When finished with the last step click on [OK].

If you do not know, or having difficulties setting up these, you can send me a private message, and then we can tackle it from there.

I hope that this will help.

By the way, any of you guys also experiencing a very slower internet connection, connecting through OpenWeb's VPN lately...?

It was all fine this weekend, but today my download speed is currently around 5-6Kb/s.

I hope that this is just a temporarily thing. Because I do enjoy this 10GB Account so!!! And also, the feedback and support from OpenWeb's side is very good!:)

i see this is unshaped and running over openweb's fiber - can any one who is using this confirm their low latencies for international gaming

OpenWeb's VPN Online Latency...

I am using OpenWeb's VPN Connection to play Battlefield 2 on SAIX Servers [Local Servers]. http://games.saix.net/

So far the connection speed was not what I have expected. I did e-mail Keoma about this, and asked her if it would help to upgrade my current 384K line to a 512 one. She said unfortunately not. The only way that I would be sure to get low latencies from playing online games is to get a 4Mbit/s line.

So far my ping on Battlefield 2 - on SAIX is above normal. Ping: 80 - 130.

I hope that this can give all an indication, regarding OpenWeb's VPN Connection speed. This is what I get on their 10Gb VPN - 384K Connection.

Cheers.:)

As far as I know its unshaped international, so you wont really see improved latency to local sites. You'd probably get better pings to saix when not using the vpn.

Interesting, seeing as line speed has nothing to with your latency.
You would get the same latency on a 384kbps line as a 4mbps line.

(Taking into consideration it's not like 20 people using the line)

thanx for all the replies and discussions...but my question is still un-answered... :(

basically when i connect one computer to the VPN using Windows Computer...everything is perfect...except for SPEED....but bcoz i have another VPN with my other branches...so i need to connect thru the Router...so

my main concern is to get it working ...using my router...so i can share the same connection for my office guys...they missing internet more than anything else...

:)

thats my core question; how will this perform for wow/aoc/HG:L :)

Hi everyone
I foud this forum looking for answers.I just want to share my own experience.I recently sign for an Openweb VPN 10G account.I use a Telkom ADSL 5100 router on a 384 line.My VPN account drops constantly(several times per day),low download speeds about 6-10 kb/s from torrents.I tested on their web site, gave reads of only 156 kbbs.I've been exchanging e-mails with their support center,I still having problems.

Some more info:

4Mb versus 384k lines latency IS different, due to the different signalling rates of the DSL product itself - I've proven this by upgrading from 384k (28ms Ping to SAIX BF2 Servers) to 4096kbps (18ms to BF2 SAIX Servers).

You can bypass the VPN Product by adding a route into your routing table (windows XP/Vista) like so:

route add 196.0.0.0 mask 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.2 -p (or whatever the IP of your router is, the -p makes the route PERSISTENT)

That rule above makes 196 address (which are ALL in SA) go through the ADSL Local-only and not the VPN. Adding a single IP address is like so:

route add 66.8.95.181 mask 255.255.255.255 10.0.0.2 -p

I did speak to the Senior Technician in charge of the VPN Side of things, and he said he made some firewall changes to hopefully increase speeds. Are you guys using the speedtest on the OpenWeb website to test speeds ?

Speed Tests Done...

I did some speed tests on my side, only difference here is that I'm using my Webonline Local Only Account, which is SAIX based.

Here are the results of a local speed test, and an FTP Download from ftp.freebsd.org (in the states - so its definately international):

Distance to ftp.freebsd.org

PING www.freebsd.org (69.147.83.33): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 69.147.83.33: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=350.329 ms
64 bytes from 69.147.83.33: icmp_seq=1 ttl=50 time=366.328 ms
64 bytes from 69.147.83.33: icmp_seq=2 ttl=50 time=350.473 ms

Screenshot of results:

I'm going to recharge my Openweb 30Gb Local only and try with that later today....

Speed Test with IS local-only account...

Just as I suspected..

Using the IS based local-only account shows really reduced speeds, dont know if there is throttling going on...

So this does not look like Openwebs fault, IS Seems to be the culprit. MrBeep maybe contact IS about this ?

okeee so no one on this vpn has done some actual international gaming such as wow/oac/tr....

Check out this thread:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=133443&page=2

"I will give my opinion from my experience so far in using it over a period of one month.

I play WoW on the EU realms - I will get anywhere between 400-600 ms while raiding. Very fast, the unshaped really helps.

Funnily enough I can't say the same for local gaming. I also play Warcraft 3 on the local server. With my VPN connected, I get a reported "higher" ping of about 6-10ms higher than if I just logged on with my local only account (same one that I use for the VPN). I suppose this is because of where the server is hosted (I live in CPT and the server is in PTA I think). So if I have this right when connected to the VPN, my traffic route looks like this: cpt, pta, cpt, international / local. Whereas if I was just on my local only account it would be cpt, pta, local. Obviously it is a lot more complex than that, just saying it looks like I am bounced up and down the country before I get on to anything."

I unfortunately dont use it for local gaming....
