Last night I upgraded my MBPs stock 5400rpm 150gb hdd to a nice fast 7200rpm 250gb and I'm already noticing the difference. While I was at it I created a dedicated 10gb scratch disk for PS3 and hid that (out of sight out of mind) which is a good idea for any heavy PS user - the scratch disk that is, not necessarily hiding it.

Unfortunately that brings to a close the potential upgrades for my MBP as the RAM is also maxed out so my next upgrade will be to a completely new machine . . . but that's pretty far down the road.

I will need a new keyboard first - some of the keys are overly warn - so that's something to look forward to. :D

bwana, just out of interest when did you first bring home your shiny MBK home?
Not sure . . . let me just check with Amazon.

EDIT: Looks like Jan 07.

So how much you gonna sell it for? when getting ur new one?
Sell? I've got my 17" Powerbook G4 running next to me and my PB 1400CS sitting at home. Selling is unlikely. ;)

Did you do the replacement yourself and if so how much of a mission was it?

I am thinking of doing the same.

I've done it for MBs and MBPs - which do you have? The MB is dead easy - the MBP requires considerably more screwdriver work.

MB hdd is also user serviceable which means your warranty if fine even if you do it.

17in MBP.

You'll need a small phillips head and a torx driver.

Is it out of warranty?

Yeah. Mine is the first gen MBPs released that I picked up while I was in the US.

Could you give an estimate as to how long it took you and the degree of difficulty?

I have put together my own PCs from parts before so its not really a tools or skills concern but rather the fact that doing this sort of thing annoys me intensely ;)

It took about 10-15 minutes all together but at the end I was rocking the sprog back to sleep with one arm which was slowing things down. One screw kept sticking to the magnetic latch mechanism which was a pain.

I'll need to check but iirc the first time I did it (had to check the disk with spinrite) I got instructions from http://www.ifixit.com/
