Ok.
1. Not modem related
2. Not account related
3. Not copper related - as you would have no problem then
4. Copper cabling has been replaced with 0.4mm gel cables instead of 0.5mm
5. Resulted in line degradation which permits only 2Mb line instead of 4Mb
Telkom are obviously aware of this problem and have the means to offer you 4Mb, 3Mb, 2Mb and 1Mb packages, but still insist using terminology to offer an "up to 4Mb speeds" and their pricing structure is based on the 1Mb line which is incorrect as according to the new packaging on Telkom's website they offer only 3 packages called "fast", "faster" and "fastest", based on 384kb, 512kb and 4096kb technology.
Do Telkom have a new measure in determining that 4096kb is not 4Mb anymore, but according to them anything up to 4Mb is the "fastest" option and charge you and I the same fees if you have 4096, 3072, 2048 or 1024.
My friend who lives in Plumstead used to have copper cabling up until a year ago with a stable 4096Mb speed. Telkom then changed the copper cable and it was at this stage his line stopped syncing properly at 4096 with the DSlam and would reset itself eventually right down to 1024 and less.
They reduced him to 2048 and after much complaining from his side they could offer him 3072 stable which is better than 2048.
See if you can try and get 3072 first before settling for 2048.
That is all my friend can advise you to do. That is of course assuming that the problem lies with the cable? As far as the pricing goes, he could not get a reduced account
All the above wording I basically typed verbatim from him.
Hope this helps.
