Murder rate: 62 per 100,000 inhabitants

What’s happening: A European bastion in the heart of turbulent South Africa, picturesque Cape Town nonetheless has the country’s highest murder rate. The city’s homicides usually take place in suburban townships rather than in the more upscale urban areas where tourists visit. According to the South African Police Service, most of the Cape Town area’s violent crimes happen between people who know one another, including a horrific case last year in which four males doused a female friend in gasoline and lit her on fire. Occurring just outside city limits, the incident apparently happened after the assailants had taken hard drugs, the use of which has risen along with Cape Town’s violent crime rate. The whopping 12.7 percent rise in the city’s murder rate from 2006 to 2007 certainly has local politicians worried, especially as South Africa prepares to host the 2010 World Cup. The government has hired more police officers to prepare for the tournament, which could help cut crime in soccer-fan hot spots. But until better efforts are made to police Cape Town’s poverty-stricken townships, it’s unlikely that the murder rate—an average of 5.9 per day—will see any major drop.

Nyanga/Philippi East has had the distinction of the highest murder rate in the country for several years now. If you go into those townships and see how people live the figures wouldn't come as a suprise.

Basically, I often used to work in these two areas and to describe conditions there as abject would be an understatement. Basically there's a shebeen on nearly every corner, unemployment especially amongst the youth is particularly high and people live on top of one another...a situation which puts strain on already dysfunctional family units which are in most cases headed by women.

If you want to see how ANC policies have failed the people of Nyanga/Philippi I suggest you take a drive there on a weekend with a black buddy- during daylight hours!

Please don't provoke him. He will just tell you the area he will live in has only had 2 murders in the last 150 years and that his super duper back road system avoids all hijackers, potholes and possible aggressive MyBB members looking for him :D

Sure.

This report confirms my claims that although murders in Cape Town in whole are high, they are much more confined to specific suburban township and are also more drug-related (not theft-related). Thus, the other more upmarket suburbs in Cape Town are very safe.

In JHB, this is different. The occurences of murders are much more spread out across all suburbs, making it much more difficult to decide in which suburb to reside in to remain "safe".

I know lots of people in both CPT and JHB. None of those in CPT have ever been exposed to violent attacks, robbery or murders. Most of those in JHB have been directly or indirectly affected by those crimes.
 
Not sure if cannabilism still exists in australia's neibour, PNG, but not surprised to see them on the list.

Not really sure why you bothered quoting me. My surprise was from learning that New Orleans has a higher murder rate than Cpt.

Thats quite a pompous thing to say, just becuase YOU don't know anyone affected then it doesn't exist eh?
 
The police statement is correct. I live in Somerset West and our murder rate is low, Lwandle nearby makes up for this.

I'm now off to take my son for a walk down to the park - I have no fear of being a victim of crime.

But his nanny who lives in Maccassar is scared crappless to allow her son to go outside: The poor dude has to spend school holidays at my place. I feel sorry and pissed off that these kids will NEVER have the same childhood experiences my son enjoys.
 
Quite weekend in JHB

Maluleke said a total of 245 people were arrested over the weekend in central Johannesburg during anti-crime operations.

Thirteen were arrested for armed robbery, eight for theft, six for shop-lifting and four for the possession of stolen property.

Others were arrested for crimes including serious assault, fraud, attempted murder, malicious damage to property, intimidation, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, drunken driving, loitering and drinking in public.
