So I've got my new laptop with Vista on and want to transfer all files from my old XP desktop. Bought a USB-USB data link cable. Installs perfectly on the XP pc but does not install on Vista. In some strange way the driver installed once when I plugged it in to a USB and it started the Transfer wizard but would not connect to the XP pc. Now when I plug it in it pops up the "found new hardware". But cannot find drivers on PC, cd or Internet.

Please help. I need to transfer about 80GB of data. And I do not want to use my 2GB memory stick.

:(

Do yourself a favour and get a cross-over network cable. USB is really not designed as a PC-to-PC interface.

Are we talking about Vista x86 or Vista x64 here? Makes a big difference driver wise.

You can try running the installer with XP compatibility on. Its under right click->properties->compatability.

+1 ... a crossover cable is pretty cheap and faster than USB 2.0 transfer rates. Esp, if you have Gigabit Adapters.

Why not just take the old hard drive, plug it into the new pc and transfer the stuff drive to drive, much faster then usb and cheaper then using crossover, as i presume you will have to go buy one.

Or buy an 80Gb external USB HDD, copy stuff to it, move to new PC, copy stuff back?

As a plus, you can use it as a backup device.

Yeah, 160gb is entry level, i have not seen an 80gb in ages, but i still think that drive to drive is best, its fast, cheap and stable, with usb enclosures you sometimes get the delayed disk error thing.

Setting up the LAN???

Okay. I have my cross-over cable and connected the 2 PC's. Doesnt work. On the Vista machine it says Unidentified LAN and "Limited or no connectivity". On the status it shows that packages has been sent but none received.

I changed the IP addresses on both machines.
LAPTOP(vista) IP: 192.168.0.12
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.11

Desktop (XP) IP: 192.168.0.11
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Both computers are in the same workgroup (MSHOME)

On the Xp machine my only LAN connection shows "1394 Connection 2"
That doesnt sound right.

My desktop does not pick up the Laptop at all and the Laptop only has the "Limited connectivity" LAN showing but cannot access it.

PLEASE HELP. I only want to share files. No internet connection.

have u tried dhcp (autoconfig) prior to assigning adaptor settings?

i dont have any experience with this crossover scenario so i dont know what a solution would be but it might help if you temporarily disable firewalls on both machines (after disconnecting from the internet)

Sounds like you might be overly complicating things.

1) Check that both of your NICs (LAN adapters) are working and drivers assigned.
2) Set all network values under TCP/IP to "Automatically Assign" "... don't create manual IPs unless you absolutely need to.
3) Run ""Network Setup Wizard" ön both computers and enable ""File and Print" "Sharing.

Ive tried auto IP assigning and didnt work. Both computers have Firewall disabled.

Just leave the Firewalls ENABLED. That should not affect the connection. You should still be able to see the shared resources through the firewalls. Better to leave it on.

That's your firewire interface. Make sure that you configured your LAN interface with the IP. Your firewall might also have to be set up to see the LAN as a trusted domain.

That should get automatically configured as he runs the setup wizard. Windows Vista has an option to set a workgroup or LAN as trusted.

Ran the wizard on XP machine and showed "completed". Then ran the Wizard on the Vista machine and it failed. When I go to "My network places" on the XP machine there is nothing. I then go to Settings and it only shows "1394 connection 2".
Oh and another thing. Went to Device manager and under Network adapters it shows this "1394 Net#2" and under the "other" tab it shows Ethernet controller but with an exclamation mark. Does this help?

I am a woman so please excuse if I dont understand everything :p

Yes, that helps. It means there is a problem with the adapter on that machine. The little yellow exclamation mark means that either the device is not loaded properly or the device is faulty. It might give you more info if you open up the properties for that device and try to load a new driver (if you have internet). Don't worry... you are doing fine. We will get it sorted!

I tried searching for the driver on the net but it does not seem to work. After searching the net it asks for the CD that came with the card. The card is integrated with my motherboard. I also tried uninstalling the faulty controller and restarting but it just opens the "New hardware found wizard" and doesnt finish the installation because no driver can be found.

I've used it before because my little brother once had a friend over and they played Call of Duty 2 over the LAN.
