MTN SMS Delivery Problems

I have a friend who is on MTN. She communicates mostly via sms and therefore relies heavily on it. The problem is that many of the sms's she sends don't get delivered. It is really annoying. I am on Vodacom and have sent about 300 sms's to her this past month, every single one was delivered instantly without fail (I also know this because I have delivery reports enabled, which is free on Vodacom, unlike second best MTN). The amount of sms's that she sends my way that don't get through is insane. It's almost like what's the point of sending it in the first place. She did call MTN and even gave very specific examples (i.e. date, time and content) of sms's that did not get through. The MTN people told her that their records show that the sms's in question did get through and that in fact all sms's sent by her were reported to be delivered successfully, but they clearly aren't getting through even if MTN's system is saying they are.

Is anybody else having similar problems? Can anyone suggest a possible cause or steps to help get the problem sorted? This has really gotten out of hand and has been going on for far too long so I would like to get it sorted out.

Thanks in advance

Nope no way out of this, MTN have serious problems, none of their problems get addressed EVER!! because the customer doesn't really matter, and I know its not just me:

I have complained countless times about my 3G not working, never getting a connection or incredibly slow speeds. Even at 2 am I cannot connect, I have also had smses not delivered or delivered 6 hours later, I have complained on their website, complained on hello peter, a techie came out and tested my signal which was perfect, but seemed to think that nothing could ever be wrong on MTN's side, I still experience problems. But i give up. I would port to Vodacom in an instant if i wasn't on contract.

MTN has lost the plot, their network is offline or broken more often than its is working

:) yeah, not a fan of MTN myself, been with Vodacom from the beginning. The problem is you still have to communicate with people who use MTN as their provider so you still feel their mess-ups

MTN does not charge for delivery reports as alluded to in the original post.

I have both an MTN and Vodacom Contract and with both of them my sms's deliver perfectly and instantaneously and I get delivery reports.

Perhaps your friend should try the alternate sms center number provided?

MTN is a joke. About 3 years back when I had a problem with my voicemail box having been deleted, and after a month of getting no joy from their call centre, I rocked up at head office and was lucky enough to track down their network manager.

He told me straight up that their network is so overloaded and in a state of shambles that it's a nitemare. This was 3 years back, so I don't know if thats still the case, apparently it looks like it still is?

After hearing this, I'm glad I'm on CellC prepaid and not MTN...

although my mother-in-law who's on MTN does not have the same issues.

She's in PE.

Is it only a localized (Gauteng) problem, or is it countrywide?

I was told apparantely MTN has 4 nodes (don't know what it's called but where all cellular/data network converge into a central point) and Vodacom only has one, so if that one in Vodacom fails there will be big problem with vodacom (happened once or twice in the last year already with no connection to VC number for like 10-15 minutes).

Alternate sms center number is worth a try, any idea what it is though?

I have been told by many friends on MTN that they don't enable delivery reports as the get charged for them, if that is no longer the case then I would definitely recommend that to be turned on

I had the exact same problem when I stayed in East London - no sms's would go through ever. MTNSP said it was the phone but yet my vodacom sim sent sms's fine? Anyway live in PE now and no problems.

With regards to delivery reports, AFAIK, on prepaid you pay for delivery reports but not on contract. I dunno about Topup though.
