South African's Robben Island museum will be closed while authorities cull a colony of rabbits that has invaded the site where Nelson Mandela was jailed.

Authorities said on Tuesday the museum, popular with tourists wanting to see the former president's cell, would be temporarily closed while the rabbits were killed to protect plant life and historical buildings at the World Heritage site.

"The current population is so large that it threatens to permanently damage the island's sensitive vegetation, and poses a serious threat to other fauna species," Seelan Naidoo, the museum's acting chief executive said in a statement.

He said the exact number of rabbits was unknown.

In the Cape Times it says there are over 10 000 rabbits.

Far better to let them die of starvation and myxo-matosis.

Sarcasm becomes you doesn't it.

There are other options such as relocation which interestingly enough was being done by an individual who was stonewalled from the word go by the beaurocracy that we have become accustomed to at all levels of Government departments.

Far easier to kill than to take responsibility for the lives of those that you deem to be under your control.

Pity we cannot take the same course of action against the human population who are pro-creating at a rate that too is unsustainable.

If culling isnt a decent way of managing species numbers what is?
Deport them to a country with fewer of that species? Naa it is the only way.
We all know rabbits breed like... well rabbits, bloody quickly. Their numbers can grow at rediculous rates and they can cause all sorts of harm. They need to be taken care of.

What i find works best is a .22 rifle using magnum grain - they wont stand a chance.
And they jump bloody high with a straight on headshot.

Sorry if you guys are squeemish, i dont hunt myself, have before with a friend on their family game farm, but prob wont do it again.
Dont feel too much for rabbits as i know there is an abundance of them.
Their meat can be given to all the hungry people out there who would like some cooked hare.

It's wabbit hunting sweason.

COD6 anyone?

I prefer stalking my prey with a hunting knife, smeared with grease and wearing nothing but a loin cloth.

Remind you of another species that walks on two legs?

It irks me that we will destroy any species that we deem to be an aborhance. The rate we are going as a species we are going to destroy everything that we need to survive. There is a balance that is required for the survival of any and all living things and nature has a way to ensure that that balance is maintained. we are f@cking with it and at the end of the day will eventually pay the ultimate price.

Why the "thumbs down"?

There was a suggestion that they get captured and sterilized instead of caught and poisoned.

I'm sure there are ways to make some money out of "hunting" them rather.;)

What do you want to cull birds for?

If every single rabbit in the whole of South Africa ended up dead we would not be close to destroying the 'species'.

Rabbits were never natural inhabitants of Robben Island and, as they have no natural predators, have unbalanced nature. Plants are part of nature too.

Nature has been pretty ruthless in getting rid of various 'species' throughout the millenia, it wasn't all man.

We're talking about a tiny island full of starving rabbits, not the entire species.

The rabbits were never endemic to the island and have no natural predators because the feral cats on the island were exterminated.

Natural predators would be the best course of action, and what better predator than man himself?
