Altech lawyers win right to grill MTN

Altech CEO Craig Venter denies fighting the merger because of sour grapes. Altech was short-listed to buy Verizon for itself but MTN outbid it. Venter said he was no longer interested in taking over Verizon's networking operations in SA and a handful of other Africa countries but was fighting the deal to stop the cellular operator becoming too dominant in another aspect of the industry.

ROFLMAO. Ok mr Venter, if you say so :D

Legal rights are legal rights.

Internet Solutions CEO Angus MacRobert has also accused MTN of anticompetitive behaviour, saying it would worsen if it expanded into other areas.

But Internet Solutions decided not to spend time and money fighting the merger. MacRobert said it would probably get permission to go ahead anyway.
And once again IS makes me proud. Nawt! IS have a long history of not making me proud, and it's getting extremely annoying.

Can someone please tell me if the Altech lawyers have been strapped up and been fed an abundance of little blue pills? They seem to be on a mission!

I would love to be apart of Altechs legal team, they are seeing more action than Telkom!

The question we need to ask ourselves is; "What have Altech got up their sleeves?"

Why the big drama to get a licence to link their repeaters / high sites?

Why the sudden interest in stopping MTNNS from buying Verizon?

To give us cheap internet????

If you knew what price BT could provide you with tier 1 IP bandwidth in Madeira, you would be more than a little shocked.

The price issue comes in with the cable from Madeira to Melkbosstrand. Unless you happen to own the cable, you have to pay a premium for high speed IP.

Do Altech have shares in one of the undersea cables, own their own satellite, or rent a transponder on someone else's satellite?

Telkom/BCX merger got blocked

Why shouldn't MTN/Verizon ?

It's pretty much the same thing. It would reduce the competitive landscape.

Everyone seems to be of the opinion that this merger is a bad thing, especially due to cross-subsidization and therefore, being cheaper.
Surely cheaper is what we want?
If the other ISPs are charging more and people leave them to go to MTN/Verizon, they drop their prices and the clients move back, this is exactly the type of competitiveness we want in the SA industry.

Or have I completely missed the plot here?

Zikzakly:D

It's clear then that ICASA is simply incompetent, for a competitor (Altech) to be given the right and powers to regulate how others (MTN-Verizon) play the field!
These are very sad times in South Africa, we need an overhaul of ICASA!

was no longer interested
