In a surprise development but one that will be widely welcomed in SA’s technology industry, communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has elected not to continue to fight the fast liberalisation of SA’s telecommunications industry.

Keep checking back. I'll be updating the story into Friday evening...

sweet - done and dusted

time for a celebratory beer!! I never thought we'd see this day.

...and thanks for the article Duncan!

The minister will continue to issue policy and policy directions to support the growth and investment in the sector as well as the other objects of the act such as the promotion of universal service and access in order to make communications affordable and accessible to all.

but then this statement is really taking the piss. i mean c'mon, why would they suddenly care now? Jeez.

The minister ought to resign in the wake of this debacle. If she refuses to go, she should be fired by the president. She has demonstrated she is singularly incapable of managing this critically important economic portfolio.

I smell a Motlante. I think he must have stepped in here. This is completely out of line with her poisonous ivyness's actions so far.

full liberalisation has failed in many other countries to the detriment of the consumer
I'd love to hear which other countries, and how much worse off their [-]politicians[/-] consumers are?

The VANs self-provision issue yes :), but Poison Ivy as MoC and the rest of her arse-creepers that she has planted everywhere - unfortunately that still needs to be resolved with tons of herbicide.

I couldn't agree more & thanks for the great news :).

Strategically, I hope that Stalin-Mafole gets the boot first since Poison Ivy is unlikely to pose much of a threat without Stalin-Mafole pulling Ivy's strings, thereafter Poison Ivy will fall on her sword, and then hopefully Paris Mashile will do his walk of shame along with several other ministerial appointees at !CASA...

Right. Now ICASA issue some licenses before the next person takes office. At least it will be harder for them to say no then...

YAAAAAY. If I wasnt working... This would be my first Tequila Friday in 6 years!
