I got hold of a cradle to go with my newly acquired E272 (thanks again v3g!) only to find that my E272 won't fit.

Compare v3g's E272 with my E272, apart from the fact that my antenna connector is hidden under the label, there are two indentations (top-left and bottom-right) which mate with the pins on cradle.

Fortunately Poynting Direct gave me the option of returning the cradle if I wasn't happy with it (they cost about R450).

I don't understand what's going on with Huawei and the E272s lately - chips out of stock and now a variant of the E272 that seems to be more like an E270 in disguise :(.

I've tried several Game stores where E272s were reported still available, and they were all sold out, I will have to wait for an Ethernet connected HSPA device that doesn't depend on PCMCIA or USB.

In all fairness, there were posts a few months earlier and hints to snap these up while you could. I think it's way too late now. You snooze, You lose.

Yep - I read those posts and did try getting an E272 from Game, but it was already too late.

Maybe a Game in TweeBuffelsSonderWaterFontein will have stock but I'm not prepared to travel that far.

I'll swap you.

Qualcomm, who makes the chips, discontinued the chipset used in the E272. But this 2 versions of the E272 is also news to me.

Can't you file down the two pins on the cradle?
Possibly, but I suspect they are there to ensure the antenna connectors line up correctly. I'd rather drill two holes in the E272.

There are still a couple in Cape Town, I know someone who bought one from Game @ N1 City a week ago, apparently the Vodacom 3G store (no affiliation with v3g :)) in Canal Walk has some too.
I'll swap you.
Thanks very much, I'll take you up on that offer, at least just to see how much gain I get from the cradle.

I believe you can use the Poynting E220 adapter (ADPT-024) with the E272.

Apparently it works pretty much the same. I haven't tested it yet. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Hi guys i have just 'discovered' this as well. . . . . .so how does one 'connect' this lovely e272 to a external antenae? any update on the locating pins??

Jacques

It sounds like Huawei sold Vodafone a batch of E270s disguised as E272s - which also doesn't make sense - very strange IMO.

@v3g, any clarity from Vodafone or Huawei on this batch of E272s and why they don't appear to be compatible with the cradle?

No, I suspect it was a case of the last batch being available and we grabbed it.

We're still trying to find a logical successor for the E272...:(

A memory-stick-sized HSPA router that is also a wifi router [AP], and the male end of the router's connector is RJ45 instead of USB, would be quite nice :D. Of course an external antenna connector would be essential or antenna-docking capability like the E272. Maybe a female RJ45 connector as well for switch attachment, and the router should support bridged mode to allow it to be used as a standalone HSPA modem for those who find a portable router useful...

....and with a cappuccino attachment....:)

The B970 is nice, but a bit big, though still portable.

Reminds me of pictures I saw years ago via the Whirlpool forums where Australians took to the roads with their iBurst UTDs and omni-directional antennas mounted on the roofs of their cars - that was a strange but very funny sight to behold from afar :).

That would be going overboard, but now that I've thought it through a bit more, such a stick-sized router would also need power from an external transformer, but probably best to add a USB option as well for mobility...

Ok so is it R400 for the cradle - does this included everything (Antenna, etc) ?

This has got most of what you require, but not memory-stick-sized.
