As a wedding photographer, I've seen a number of videos from the Nikon D90 and Canon 5DMk2...and they are really, really impressive.

I guess the saying is true "It's not the camera, but the eye behind it) ;)
 
I think the modern generations of point and shoot cameras are a study in marketing destroying the underlying quality of a product. My 2MP Sony camera I bought 6 years ago takes far superior pictures in low light than my new 7.2MP Sony camera. The Megapixel race has gone the way of amplifiers - more watts or more pixels = better in advert land. These extra pixels are crammed into the same tiny sensor chip area, greatly reducing sensistivity, low light performance and increasing noise.

Luckily, DSLR's seem to be less affected by the Megapixel problem, but only because they tend to use larger sensors and more expensive circuitry. It's a shame the lower end of the market are sold inferior products which aren't as good as the older stuff in some situations.
 
I had a small 5MP Nikon for happy snaps and was completely outshone by my friends camera which was only 4MP but had a much better lens.
The issue of MP == good quality is a fallacy.
You need both a large MP count and a decent optical lens.
I can't wait for my Canon1000D to arrive in my xmas basket as it'll be the first step into proper photography for me.
