Can't say I didn't see this coming...

The Electric Playground learned that Electronic Arts has cancelled development of future projects in the Need for Speed series due to declining sales and declining critical reception for the street racing series. They offer no hints about the source of this news and admit they've received no official confirmation of this from EA. Electronic Arts' latest version of their long running Need For Speed racing series, Need For Speed Undercover, has gotten poor reviews and also apparently not been selling nearly as well as previous titles in the franchise. So its not a shock to hear rumors that financially troubled EA may be retiring the Need For Speed series. EA director of communications Colin Macrae provided Electric Playground with the following comment: "We're working through a process on people, products, and facilities at EA and don't have any announcements today."

... Just had to add though, that they won't actual cancel it (IMO)

They'll just rename it as most companies do!

Yea they did really screw over the Need for Speed franchise...

It was making money and they just wanted more and more, so quality went down the tube... Everytime a movie came out about cars (Every 6 months) They made a game that revolved around that type of racing...

Need for Speed has always had some excellent games in the series and then some real crud. I always enjoyed Most Wanted. Was a great balance.

They should have stuck to the recipe of Underground 2 and added some hardcore tuning etc. options for enthusiasts, with the Police features of Most Wanted.

But ya I agree, after Most Wanted things really went downhill...drastically.

It really is sad Ive been playing need for speed since the first one, they have manage to utterly destroy a great franchise, pro street was crap but if i have to compare it with Undercover pro street is ten times better, I cant believe EA actually said they acknowledged pro street was not being recieved very well and that they were working hard to make Undercover what the fans wanted and then push out this buggy piece of crap:mad:. Wouldnt it be nice if they sold the rights to codemasters...:D
IMO nfs porsche and most wanted are the best two titles in the franchise.

Blackbox changed then NFS formula when they took over the series from Ea Canada and they've had more failures then success IMO

All the Best NFS games were made by EA canada (Formerly DSI)
NFS2 / NFS2 SE
NFS 3 (Still the Biggest Selling NFS games)
NFS 4 High Stakes (did almost as well as nfs3)
Porsche Unleashed (was technically ahead of it's time when it was released and it was critically recieved.

Then blackbox came into the picture in 2002 and then EA canada and BBOX released different versions of HP2 for different platforms since the BBOX version of HP2 was superior than the EA canada one, ea decided to let them take over the franchise from there onwards and look where that has ended now !

EA should just remove this hollywood storyline crap and create a racer in the mould of the original nfs games 1 - 5 !!! NFS was about supercars and they should go back to that (IMO PGR 3 and 4 is more true to the NFS series than any other game out at the moment)

most wanted was awesome. I didn't really enjoy the others except for Underground 1 (My first PS2 game). Didn't play Undercover yet

I enjoyed everything up untill Most Wanted...
Carbon was still fine... Just fine thats it.

After Carbon though it went really bad. But I give credit to John Riccitiello(He's the new CEO i think) in admitting that they stuffed up on the NFS Franchise, though they still messed up NFS Undercover, which they've been busy with at the same time they were busy with Pro Street:(.
Maybe this one gave them a wake up call... it has to...

He also mentioned they (the industry as a whole) is starting to bore people...(see below)

One critique compared EA to companies like Ubisoft and concluded that EA's innovation in new and old IPs, "Crawls along at a snail's pace.",[25] while even the company's own CEO, John Riccitiello, acknowledged the lack of innovation seen in the industry generally, saying, "We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play. For the most part, the industry has been rinse-and-repeat. There's been lots of product that looked like last year's product, that looked a lot like the year before."

Played Race Driver Grid again this wkend and they should have "borrowed" that engine to make Undercover. Take away the "tab" key function and put drag and drift back.

Actually they should have just brought out a patch that added new cars to Most wanted! Nuff Said! :D

Agreed most wanted was the last best one of the series. Prostreed was grud and so all the others I just don't feel really into the story. But I do miss the coolness of nfsunderground 2 with the lights and so on.

IMO Need for Speed 2 : Special Edition was the best game of the entire series.
All the really uber-cool super cars, great tracks (ie: Proving Grounds), really cool videos of the cars.

"man, i miss that game" they should really go back to that... Imagine Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo, Porche Carrera GT, Koeniggseg CCRX, Aston Martin DBS, Audi R8, oh gosh... I'm gonna carry on forever...

agreed, i used to love watching the vids of the cars etc...the addition of the cops etc chasing was cool, but this whole new bunch of Fast and furious type stuff is garbage.....

Proving grounds did rock!!!

Yeah, those videos where the best. It appealed to the guys who really "knew" super cars. These new NFS's are just there cause they pull in the masses. (imo)

Awesome game... Probably one of my all time top 10.
