WIKILEAKS PRESS RELEASE
Thu Dec 18 18:23:12 GMT 2008

For immediate release.

"South African government demands bank report takedown"

The South African government's Competition Commission has demanded
the removeal of 590 page inqury into the South African banking
system that released by Wikileaks yesterday, saying that
it had been obtained illegally.

The document, a substantially redacted form of which was publically
released by the Commission on December 12, was "unredacted" by
Wikileaks staff to reveal key details provided by what many South
Africans call South Africa's banking cartel.

Rule number 1 when dealing with online containment. Dont threaten to sue people or it just makes the story that much more juicy. Its now being spread around the Internet and to all the media agencies.

To the enterprising lawyer trying to remove this from wikileaks.org.... you dont stand a snowflakes chance in hell of removing that article. The american government has tried... scientology has tried and even the russian government has tried. The Internet was designed to hold dishonest people more accountable. Keep it honest SA government :D

Illegally? They made it freely available on their own website.

This reminds me of the US government military reports that came out on wikileaks. They released .docs as press releases. Problem is when you went and undid the edits (there is an option to do this is Office 2007),.... you got the full uncensored version.

Nice, thanks W1z4rd. Great post. What will Wiki do in this case?

They will simply host the data as they are doing now. Its really up to local journalists to run with the story unless an international journalist wants to pick it up.

I know several media agencies have the data already :D

Damn at the office now and can't download it Grrr - will have to wait till this afternoon when I get home.

Nice one w1z4rd!

Hey this is not me... kudos to the person who leaked this! Im just following the story.. and sharing :D Cause sharing is caring!

That report is like over 500 pages... Im only on page 90 :(

If you have any contacts in the media folks... let them know about this :D

I hope it's still there when I get home - then again - I don't see them getting Wiki to take it down :D

Wikileaks won't take it down. Wikileaks have never taken anything down that I know of.

Unredacted version is available here. The request from the Competition Commission to Wikileaks to remove the document is available here.

Not directly linked to the document, so cannot be that illegal. :p

If anyone want the Redacted version, lol, PM me.

The CC's response is hilararious. Anyway, I think Wikileaks just posting this letter serves as a perfect response :)

Illegally? They made it freely available on their own website.

The "blacked out" or censored bits in the original files freely available on their website can be viewed merely by changing colour preferences in Acrobat Reader. So much for anything illegal.

The letter from the CC to wikileaks is quite funny. It does not have all the usual legal "gonna sue the pants off you bastards" bluster, but is more of a whine, begging them to take it down. LOL! Fat chance!
:D

Anyone care to summarise the report. Extrapolate the juicy parts.
