Hi everyone!

I need some help.

I'm getting wimax as I don't have a line running to my place "it's still new"

Now I'm not sure which will be the best.

I can get both from what i understand as the base stations for both are fairly close to me.
From what I've read up on so far is that screamer's data packages are shaped and with telkom you can get unshaped through a different isp, but telkom is only 512k line where screamer is 1mb line.

What sort of latency's can i expect and what are acceptable for online gaming as well (mostly FPS)

thnx

For FPS you need a latency of >80 to be any fun, otherwise you will just get shot all the time by people who does not yet exist.

Ive also looked into getting wimax, phoned screamer few weeks ago to find out bout my coverage etc, the help desk guy was completly useless, eventually told me he would find some one to phone me back, hasnt happend yet. I think they go up to 4mbps.

Its a bit disturbing to think that Telkom might actually offer better service......

Hi there Stormhorse

I think you have it the wrong way around:eek:. All of Screamers bandwidth is unshaped and the bandwidth Telkom offers on WiMAX is shaped and yes we can provision you with a 1 Mg connection.

Our WOW clients report latencies of around 250 to 350 to the European servers and local latencies on speedtest.net fluctuate between 15ms to 45ms.

Hope this helps

Hi there Broken Link

I PM'd you on the 4th to follow up on your query. Please check if you got the PM and let me know if I need to resend it.

We definitely have coverage in the Silver Lakes area.

Thanks

Howzit

Thanks for the reply howzit, but I think you may have skipped the part where i said that if you take a different isp with the telkom wimax you can get unshaped.. no biggie just thought i would clear that up.

Well to be honest I'm still not sure and I'm just trying to figure out whether I should or shouldn't go this route. WOW is fine if that's what you do but i tend to lean towards FPS mainly but the low ping rates on the local side is pretty good all the same!

who does screamer use for their Wimax? Telkom or Iburst/vodacom?

Also remember that you can only use Screamer as your isp. With the Telkom Wimax you can use any isp, so you can get a unshaped account on the Telkom Wimax, but Telkom only offers 512k.

Screamer has deployed their own WiMAX network.

not sure that is accurate, as they don't have a license nor spectrum allocated to them to be able to do that. If they do, then its illegal. I am sure they are just re-selling the Telkom 3.5ghz 802.16d service.

Hi Rabbit7766

Screamer took the view that their VAN's licence would sooner or later be converted to an I-ECNS licence and on that assumption took the risk of deploying their own WiMAX network. As you probably know this conversion is set to happen on the 19th Jan. They concluded a revenue share agreement with a licenced operator (and I unfortunately cannot go into details of the agreement here) to use a portion of their WiMAX spectrum.

We have been criticised because we have not done any marketing yet but this will change after the 19th when we do not have to fly under the "self deployment" radar.

The few thousand clients who already are on our network have have come mainly from word of mouth and has given us the opportunity to stress test the network and iron out any glitches.

Fair enough, but you refer to the ECS and ECNS license conversion process. This process does not include allocation of Wimax Spectrum, which is still in the process of being reviewed with possibly consequences of re-farming (dominic please correct me here if I am wrong)

Yes, the spectrum allocation process is scheduled to take place later this year.

i have a question if i get the Telkom Wimax for R240 which ISp would be best for uncapped option if this is even available?

Hi Raindupon
I think that most ISP's that offer broadband to an ADSL connection will also provide the same broadband to a Telkom WiMAX connection.

Just be sure that you don't get conned into thinking that you are buying an uncapped package when you are really getting a rolling 10 day threshold package which some ISP's like Axxess abd Mweb market under an "uncapped" banner. See http://www.hellopeter.com/the_comment.asp?recid=203200&comp=700685

Datapro offers what I think is uncapped broadband over an ADSL 512 connection for R 2,850 so your connection and broadband will cost you R3,090.00.

ps. If you are within Screamers WiMAX coverage you can get a true fibre uncapped package on a 512 WiMAX connection for R2,199 (incl VAT).

Thanks Howzit, very helpful will be sure to look into it cant wait for the new cables to come to RSA things should really start heating up then but once again thank you very much
