I call Neotel this morning to sign up for an account, all excited and stuff.

I get through to the lady who is probably the deafest person alive, everything I say, I have to repeat - even though, when I asked her "can you hear me?" she goes "yes - clearly"

Anyways, we do everything, then she says, that she is going to do a credit check with 3 possible out comes so I'm like... well, go for it, I've been given vehicle finance, don't see why I can't get Neotel.

She goes; "Sir, you've been cleared (insert silence of about 5 seconds) WITH A DEPOSIT OF R1000

I'm like... WTF?

Anyways, I'm a bit sceptical, so I say, let's carry on with the process - she tells me we going to do a one time debit order for R1000 then we I'll get activated.

I mean come on Neotel!

Telkom rapes me every month - I decide to move over, and now I must have to pay R2000 ?!?!?

I might as well stay with Telkom!
I can't afford R2000!!!!!!!!!!!! R1000 is just what I can afford - let's not forget I have to pay my Telkom bill this month too!

Can someone give me advice etc on this!

I don't know what Neotel's story is but I didn't have to pay R1000 when I got my account. I'm beginning to think Neotel is in trouble and they're trying to get their hands on as much cash as possible to sort things out. But then again I could be wrong.

Cancelled all my TI accounts as of 9:20am - 4th February 2009

This R2000 (Deposit and monthly) is going to hurt but no ya!

Busy cancelling my Telkom line.

I don't need more than 2mbps... and Neotel's Prime Unlimited is uncapped and I'll get access to internetional NS's :)

I had to send a fax off to 0800 203 736 (redirected to 012 311 2138 according to fax machine) to request to have my Telkom ADSL etc cancelled.

Wonder how long this will take!

I've applied, given permission to take the R1000 deposit (ouch!) but whatever - best I do the move now so It's done!

I've just sent another fax to the above mentioned number, I've even written on the paper when I sent the first fax and second fax.

hehehe - someone better call me soon!

@boswald

Ya, I know that my online gaming will suck with Neotel - but I'm a downloader, I can't stand the fear every month of getting large bills from Telkom.
Every month is a drama with Telkom - bills vary then I have to fight and struggle to get it down - at least with Neotel, it's R999 a month and that is that!

Granted the first month will suck (because I have to pay the R1000 deposit) and the R999 but hey... after that - it's uncapped 2mb all the way!

Gah, at least you got your thing. I'm STILL waiting after 1 1/2 weeks. I'm actually thinking of just canceling the order at this stage.

Phone them TMoose, I got a reference number etc and asked the lady to put a rush on it.
I spoke to them on Monday, they said that they'd check with the courier company why it had not yet been delivered, then promised to get back to me, which they didn't. I'll phone them again today, but I'm not really going to keep nudging them. So far I've been pretty patient because I know they're having large volumes of orders... but I won't stay that way forever.

Duuuuuuuude make ***
I got chirped the same precise story by neotel. after raising numerous stinks and threatening to take them to the asa i got it right not to pay the deposit.
So yeah, just gotta use ure verbal skills to get it right but its possible to get away without paying the stupid deposit.

gdiza,

I have cancelled my neotel account (various reasons) and I am looking for someone to take over my monthly telephone payments (R80p/m)...would you be interested?

Woudn't do him any good, he's in Cape Town. Also, I'm not sure you can take the device between cities.

Good luck to you Gdiza, hope everything eventually works out well.

they only ask for the R1000 deposite for people with bad credit

This isn't entirely true. It's for people who they (Neotel) deem to be a risk factor. I also got angry about this and spoke to a guy there. He said because I had moved houses in the last 3 months before applying (i bought a house and stopped renting) and I had changed jobs in the last 6 months (hence i could pay for the house) they perceive me as a credit risk and I had to pay the deposit. Whether you get it back or not is a completely different kettle of fish.

I haven't heard anything from Neotel but I did call Telkom this morning at like 8:10am and they have still not processed my cancellation request (which I did 2 days ago - with 3 faxes) but anyways, I sent a 4th fax this morning too.

On the phone with Neotel - apparently, my application hasn't been successful, there was a 'system error' processing my 'deposit' (more on this later)

Anyways, the lady is doing it again - okay, it has been done, and it will take 7 days for my device to be delivered and I asked her 'nicely' to please 'escalate it' because I cancelled my Telkom accoun and need my internet - I had a laugh because she whispered to me that she'll escalate it. HAHA!

Anyways, regarding the deposit.

When and if I leave Neotel - I apparently get my R1000 back (according to the lady on the phone - who was very helpful)
