Telkom and AT&T partner

I'm sorry, but the cynic inside me says the following :

1. Global recession
2. AT&T needs revenue
3. AT&T will join Telkom to milk the customers

I'm extremely unbelieving and skeptical of anything that's going on in the telecomms market at the moment.

...although he took care to mention that these customers would not have to pay extra for the services adding that “prices should be lower”.

I don't believe that.

AT&T shouldn't be joining Telkom. They should have come in on their own steam, develop their own infrastructure (they got enough cash believe me) and blow telkom out of the water. Take over most of their clients. Nothing will change like this.

Weren't these 2 company's also involved in some sort of row over interconnect fees not so long ago?

Wonder if there is any chance of reduced international peering fees...

Doubtful right?!

No scruples who you deal with when it comes to the almight dollar (or the puny rand) it seems...

It like the neighbourhood gaining another bandit and the inhabitants being told that crime will come down.

The time it would take to recover a return on the investment of infrastructure would not impress any company's executive, let alone an american one in these times.

Far better to partner.

Telkom knows they have to do something, and a good agreement with AT&T might just give them some edge on international peering. So while they might no longer have a monopoly on international, they might still be able to give better pricing than most.

If they can get nice roaming agreements up and running, they might be able to offer good mobile deals as well. Being able to use your own cellphone at reasonable rates overseas might carry a lot of clout with some businessmen.

AT&T and the apple iphone did an unholy number on the american public. AT&T are not adverse to the idea of cornering a market and milking it dry. I think Telkom might just have met it's bigger brother.

This AWESOME news. My shares are gonna skyrocket! Look at the benefits one of the other Bell's (SBC) brought to Telkom when they had their finger in our telecom's pie!

Hopefully I will be able to make all the money back that I will spend extra on telecoms in the next couple of years!

I imagine that AT&T's eventual goal will be to completely absorb Telkom. Not a bad move.

AT&T is SBC. SBC bought them out a few years back.

They're just coming back for sloppy seconds.

It is a bit worrisome. After Standard Oil, AT&T was THE monopoly. It was broken up, but it seems to put itself back together again like some zombie. And now it is searching and working with other monopolies around the world!!!!

We are the borg! You will be assimilated!

Blah blah blah

Who cares about the devil and its peering agreements? All they are out to do is.....

"How can we shake hands and milk the consumers better?"

Awesome! I look forward to AT&T (who used to be SBC and a shareholder in Telkom) rape us for another 5 years. When's Telecom Malaysia going to come back and shoot everyone's dogs?

Quite seriously, I think this isn't bad news. I don't expect charity from my telco. Just reliable service at a decent price. AT&T do that pretty well in the USA (I have an AT&T family plan with 5 phones).

Edit: For five phones and $135/mo I get unlimited cell-to-cell calls nationwide, unlimited SMSs (which are normally charged in the USA to both send and receive), plus 700 minutes to other phones, with roll-over. For an extra $25 my son gets unlimited 3G data. Compare that to anything in SA (not that I expect an AT&T stake in Telkom to change much locally).
