Didata’s big gamble

More to follow about IS's network plans on Monday. IS's fibre network investment is indeed great news - the more competition the better! Lets hope they get some WiMax spectrum to shake things up further...

Since IS is not an investor in WACS, any guesses who they are buying capacity from?

Great to be around during this time of increased competition, fresh technologies & enhanced facilities. Trust some benefits derived from the greater skills and management competence required to sustain all of this, will also find its way into governmental circles i.t.o. providing decent services, an honest growth-oriented competitive environment and dependable governance at all levels of a society no longer prone to the present wave of corruption and bribery.Go for it IS, give it your best.

I would like to know if Internet Solutions will lay its own Fibre Optic cables [to the Rosebank exchange] to replace the IPConnect links that IS rents from Telkodemonopolies for ISADSL...???
I somehow don't think Telkom will entertain this scenario.

However, there are some in the industry who are lobbying to get 'bitstream with co-located interconnection' into the forthcomming LLU regulations, essentially what you're asking for.

It is great news but is it also not a ludicrous situation?
There's a possibility that we may have lots of duplicated capacity and unlit fibre? I'm sure that all the fibre will be used in time...but Telkom do have the best (only) cabled backbone and they really are in the best position to provide upgrades and capacity to ISP's at decent prices. It seems insane that it is more cost effective to build your own countrywide fibre network than to do business with Telkom, but I don't doubt it. One would hope that even the threat of ISPs starting to self provide would bring Telkom to the table with some meaningful offers. Telkom need to specialise and focus on capacity providing and enabling. ISPs shouldn't have to lay country wide cable to be competitive (Of course they can if they want).

IS sucks. How is this great news? We are currently with IS and have issues with our internet every single day.

I think you'll find that those links are part of Telkom's IPConnect bundle, and you're simply not allowed to use another carrier (even yourself). It's what's known in regulatory circles as abuse of Significant Market Power. He who owns the local loop controls the world. Welcome to de-regulation - and you thought it was going to better than regulation... :D

Umm this is the point. IS is trying to move away from Telkom to compete better and offer better services.

If IS really wanted to offer better service, they could start by refunding the clients that suffer bad throughput / disruptions while using an IS product.
But, IS is NOT that type of company.

Really?...

Oh well thats news to me.... I tried it before and was told to sod off..

Did you ask IS for a refund?

I'm sure IS will refund you if there is any sort of SLA and excessive downtime is experienced. Any service provider of any sort should be accountable, and its up to you to ask for it. Just remember that there will have to be evidence of some sort - like call centre records - so be sure to call them every time there's an issue if you want to claim a refund.

But more to the point - all this fibre laying is brilliant news... even if it is not going to affect the 'average joe' immediately, it's certainly encouraging for things to come. It's the only way all the new ECNS licence holders can effectively make use of their new status, what with ICASA taking a lifetime to sort out their wireless spectrum allocation issues...

And - I'll bet a lot of future wireless services will be well served by a metro fibre backbone...
