Broadband on agenda for new government

Before all the regular sceptics add their 2c worth, it would be good if the new Minister of Communications simply read this framework - at least once. Of course, it would be great just to have a Minister that read anything at all on the Web...
 
Agreed Ads. I don’t think South Africa can do much worse in terms of telecoms governance than what we have seen over the past decade. There should be at least a new sense of enthusiasm with a new minister of communications, and he/she may well take things like the proposed framework from the National Broadband Forum seriously.

I do however think it will come down to the major telecoms providers to push broadband in South Africa. Incentives from Government in terms of tax breaks or even grants will be a good way to stimulate growth in the broadband market, but in the current economic climate I am not convinced that it will be a priority.

Oh excuse me lads.. but as much as i'm in support of the initiative..
The underlying tone of "broadband for all people of SA" is kinda corny ... it suggests inequality in distribution...which is not entirely true.. some people chose to use it some people don't care at all (and clearly that be the majority of constituency in SA which has other more fundamental needs)..

Fact is the sector has been mismanaged along with everything else in this country over past 15 years..

so do we need a change, YES
Does it necessarily apply to all people of SA, well in time it will......

Priority is to stop government interference with telco sector, pass regulation to stop interference and let nature (market) take its course..


There seems to be massive activities of network provisioning around SA these days ..... if that doesn't increase penetration and delivery of affordable broadband nothing will
 
We need someone that knows the Telco/Cellco/BB industry to take over as MoC - maybe Vodacom's ex-CEO, whatsisname? iBurst Snr?
 
Possibly some major telecoms providers, in order to push broadband in South Africa, could incentivise (not bribe) the new Government incumbent to comprehend the framework, through whatever means, should that incumbent be unable to read.
